The worst aspect of implants is the transmitter that has to be stuck to the side of your head, like Frankenstein’s bolt through the neck. Here’s how they work:

- A speech processor which selectively filters sound to prioritize audible speech
- A transmitter that sends power and the processed sound signals across the skin to the internal device by radio frequency transmission

INTERNAL
- A receiver/stimulator, which receives signals from the speech processor and converts them into electric impulses

- Surgical procedure necessary to install

I’ve suffered major hearing loss in one ear (too much ¡ROCK AND ROLL! when I was younger), but I’m not at the implant stage yet, but I do use a BiCROS system of over-the ear hearing aids; one piece is a mic (for the deaf ear), the other a conventional hearing aid; the mic sends audio signals through a self-contained processor over to the “good” ear, so EVERYTHING is heard through one ear. Amazingly, the brain “understands” the input, and you perceive all sound as being “in the middle” of your noggin, not just a flood of sound into the “good” ear.

Sorry to go into so much detail. Bet you didn’t expect a crash-course on hearing devices.

At one point, Rush was buying over a hundred pills per day. He doctor shopped, going to several different doctors for multiple prescriptions. He was finally arrested in the wee hours buying pills in a Denny's parking lot.

Oddly enough, even though he was doing enough drugs to knock out an elephant, his show did very well. Nobody noticed the guy was so wasted he was lucky to be able to get out of bed.
