In other words, if he cannot get a quick trial with no witnesses?
What if three or four Republicans balk at the Trump/McConnell scheme?
What happens then?
Does Trump attack McConnell?
Does Trump go berserk?

(16,784 posts)Trump is so vindictive, he will take everyone down as he does down. He would even trash the White House and its contents so no other President or tour of Americans see it. It is not like he would be trashing one of his hotels.

(73,536 posts)One of the most important factors has to do with what a few republicans are aware of now .....that Chief Justice Roberts is not only studying Senate rules, but is researching the role he will play. In the 1868 impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, Chief Justice Salmon Chase played a role in determining the rules the Senate would follow in the trial. In several instances where there were disagreements between factions, including about what witnesses would be called to testify, Chase made rulings that still technically stand. In other words, by tradition and by the rules, Roberts has the authority to rule who both sides can call upon to testify.
This does not mean Roberts will definitely exercise that authority. But it does suggest two important factors: first, that he is aware that he can, and second, that there are some republican Senators who are aware of this, as well. Hence, it is very possible that Mitch will not be able to provide Trump with the trial he wants.

(111,079 posts)He doesn't have the votes to stop witnesses.
He has hinted about witnesses in the last couple of days.
It's not going to be the trial they planned.
Trump is really off the rail with his criticism of Pelosi, since Christmas Day.

(5,499 posts)Roberts will be attacked if he rules in any way that Trump doesn't like. Everyone is open to attack. Remember, when Clinton's trial was going on we did hear a word from him. It won't be the case this time. It's really, at this point, his only strategy.
