Mitch McConnell challenged by two former Marines as impeachment puts the unpopular senator in a bind
Published 9 hours ago on December 28, 2019
.................................
Democratic candidates Amy McGrath and Mike Broihier each said they filed paperwork Friday to run for the seat currently held by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, the Washington Times reported Saturday.
.............
McConnell is in a bind on the question of whether or not to hold an impartial impeachment trial for President Donald Trump. McConnell has pledged his loyalty to Trump, but several members of his caucus reportedly have severe misgivings about such an approach and national polls show voters want a fair trial with witnesses.
McConnells poll numbers in Kentucky have cratered since he attached himself to Trump, with a recent poll showing only 37% of voters planning to reelect him.
He has also fought back against his Moscow Mitch nickname that trended on Twitter due to the Kentucky senators votes that aided Russian President Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs.

(9,426 posts)a Russian oligarch, bringing business to Kentucky. He will also bring the Russian mafia. Maybe instead of worrying about Latin Americans entering this country, we should investigate the Russian infiltration? Moscow Mitch keeps all legislation against Russia from getting hearings in the Senate. He is a traitor to his country. I wonder how many other gop members are doing business with Russians? Remember the delegation of gop members that went to Russia on July 4th? Heck of a way to celebrate Independence Day. All done on taxpayer money.

(4,290 posts)Didnt know Martha Layne Collins was McGraths mom! Gov. Collins signed my Kentucky Colonel commission years ago. (Now, where did I pack that keepsake?)
In addition to supporting the Democratic challenger to my RepubliCON representative, I will send her a check next month.
Ditch MoscowMitch!

Its sickening that any time you google Amy McGrath, the first thing that comes up is this ad:
"Pro-Abortion. Compared Trump's victory to 9/11. Further Left than anyone in Kentucky, Amy McGrath would be a radical Left turn for Kentucky.
Paid for by MCCONNELL SENATE COMMITTEE"

Regardless, I agree. The smear campaign against McGrath started minutes after she announced her intent. I hope the Democrats in the urban centers and especially in rural areas Get Out The Vote in November.

So far, all her FB posts show her in a hoodie, arguing on the merits of the moral/legal character issues against Moscow Mitch.
So now that she's announced, she'll have to continue to project visual variations for all ages and classes of KY voters, as well as convey a broader message package to compete with that of the Senate Majority Leader. She can look like his opposite, be oppositional, tear down his record; but at some point she has to be a positive campaigner and leader.
Her new look shows she's doing that.
She's got the toughest battle in the country. I hope KY voters can give him up.

Yeah, right. Kentucky will never see it, and if it does there will be way too many strings attached.
Quite frankly, if it is a question of the integrity of this country, and jobs in Kentucky to keep Moscow Mitch in the Senate, Kentucky can starve.
Maybe they should try growing hemp, and get off the tobacco train. (I am sure some have, but it could be just as lucrative as tobacco, with zero side effects.)
Sure as hell beats being in debt to russian mobsters.
