Right now, we have two separate U.S. government explanations for assassinating Soleimani.
Pentagon: It was meant to deter future Iranian aggression.
Pompeo: "There was an imminent attack taking place" we needed to stop.
Could both be true? I suppose. But it's confusing.

Like any competent government, there will always be someone who is just as qualify to take his or her place . . .

I think Pompeo knows the meaning of imminent and is intentionally trying to create an equivalence of two different things.
