The generals were never in positions to keep Trump "in check".

They would have faced court-martial. That bullshit was simply the excuse of the Republican establishment and Stein voters.

it's either follow an order or resign. And, yes the "wiser heads" fiction probably held some comfort in the early going .. but that has long since fled the scene.

(The "wiser heads" thing might have actually had some truth in dealing with normal nincompoops that we occasionally have the misfortune to elect.. Reagan, George W., et. al. Trump is in a different category.)
