Two things I don't get this a.m.

1. So Iran warned the Iraqis and the Iraqis warned the Americans of last night's attack? They were all in cahoots and the attack was a show?

2. When McConnell changes Senate rules he is just talking not allowing new witnesses and documents, right? i.e. the likes of McGahn, Bolton, etc., Right? And the others, like Fiona Hill, Vindman, etc. will be witnesses? And participate in an actual trial.

1. I think they will have a separate vote for each witness.

The Republicans have only agreed to begin the trial. McConnell and Trump do not want witnesses but that will be up to the entire Senate.

4. Take David Holmes, for example, who overheard

phone conversation at lunch...if he can not be called, then what do we have to do? Just talk about what he actually said to House?

I can see how it would be important to know that up front for sure. A person who can be talented at eliciting live witness information can be totaling different than a persuasive person who can merely describe what a witness said, effectively telling a story.

2. As for Iran, I think they wanted to assure a measured response without casualties BUT

they have a history of covert and very targeted actions over a much longer period of time. See this twitter thread below. But, I hardly think this is over. Also see my post on an official admitting they are considering targeting Trump personally.

3. 1. Iran said it would retaliate by not using proxies and by attacking U.S. military targets.

It kept its word. We should listen to its words.

10. What was the strategic value of the targets?

As this unfolds this morning, was that value high enough for this to qualify as a “retaliation”? On the heels of that, if they were, and the Iranian government did in fact leak the info to avoid U.S. casualties, did the symbolism of the attack still have the strength necessary to accomplish what they intended?

What was that intent? Two things occur to me. One is the obvious idea that you’d better do something when a foreign nation offs one of your generals or nobody respects you, and you lose all of the next elections for a while. Two is to wonder if this might not be a message to the American people, that while appearances had to be kept up, this is supposed to demonstrate a genuine intention not to escalate things. I start thinking about the possible ramifications of this and I get woozy. Can they sell this “sword of Damocles” idea enough to think that it may give them some influence in the 2020 elections?

Unfortunately, much will be decided by the orange idiot who is about to go before the cameras and rant crazily for a time, which, much to my detriment and dismay, I will be forced to watch.
