The Islamic State welcomes death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani

Qasem Soleimani: Why his killing is good news for IS jihadists

The Islamic State (IS) group has welcomed the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, the head of the elite Quds Force.

In a statement, it described the general's demise as an act of divine intervention that benefitted jihadists. However, it made no mention at all of the US, which carried out the deadly drone strike against Soleimani in Baghdad on 3 January.

President Donald Trump's decision to assassinate Gen Soleimani set off a chain of consequences - one of the first was on the unfinished war against jihadists.

Almost immediately the US-led coalition fighting IS suspended operations in Iraq. The US and its allies announced that their main job was now defending themselves. From a military point of view, they probably had no choice.

IS militants have something else to celebrate. When Mr Trump decided to kill Soleimani they were gifted the spectacle of one of their enemies, the US president, assassinating another.

So much winning........

How many times do we have to repeat this: Elections have consequences.

1. So trump did ISIS a favor. The alliances, hatreds and centuries-old...

criss-crossing blood oaths in the Middle East are too complicated for many seasoned diplomats even to navigate without rankling some feelings, much less a know-nothing, unread idiot like trump.

2. Indeed it is extremely complex and beyond our comprehension.

Any of us dummies that bothered to do some background reading when we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq were absolutely astounded at the complex tribal, territorial, religious and social interrelationships across this region.

That's the main reason I've always felt we had no damn business going in there at all.......

3. well the basic Sunni - Shite thing isn't real rocket science.

they hate one another with a passion. Have done for years .. and it isn't getting better with the ascendancy of Iran as a regional power. (thank you, Geo.W) And while it's true that there's quite a bit of factionalism (and divergent agenda) within those two basic groups .. if somebody has been getting arms, training and support from the Iranians, the chances are pretty good they're not Sunni. Conversely, the whole of the ISIL - caliphate ideology was almost entirely Sunni. This breaks down a little bit in that, while virtually all ISIL is Sunni .. by no means are all Sunni supporters of ISIL or the caliphate nonsense.

(And Donald Trump is indeed an unlettered idiot .. but the generals and analysts are not. The more you think about it .. he more extremely worrisome it becomes.)
