The contrast is pretty striking. Thanks to BuzzFeed for putting this together.
Over the years, Meghan has been shamed for the same things for which her sister-in-law, Kate, has been praised.

(7,864 posts)Poor Meghan is not the only one. We all know that the US media treats rethugs lightyears better than Democrats and liberals.
When a rich kids scroos up bad enough to get someone killed, the worst thing they say is "affluenza." If a poor kid gets stopped by police, he or she is lucky to not get tazed or kicked while handcuffed. If Obama is seen in a tan suit, it's "omg! What was he thinking!" If somebody dregs up a photo of Reagan or either Bush in a tan suit, nuttin'.

(748 posts)It's just super annoying, tabloid crap.
And when it isn't, it's "Ooh, let's make a big deal about rich people."
Until two days ago, I honestly didn't know about Meghan's heritage and only had a vague idea that the two brothers and their wives were producing lots of babies on a regular basis.
Then I saw this racism crap and I had to look into because I didn't even know where the racism could be.
Now, I'm like, "How in the ever loving fuck did they think this was okay this whole time?"

But yes, any double-standard is shameful--and especially for this reason.

(748 posts)... we got our independence a bit later by asking for it nicely. Different strat.
But, you know, these two are welcome to come to Canada to get away from racism. I guess it must be slightly better here, but I'm a white guy so I'll have to take their word for it.

(2,929 posts)The Royal family are the original Keeping up with the Kardashians. They are subsidised by the UK taxpayer for their entertainment. And they are expected to be entertaining. 24/7. The $$$media needs a constant horse race (just like our political entertainment press). It's not a double standard, it's what they have to sell. The royal family is a commodity, the press is their marketing department. They came to be before twitter, instagram and realiy television, but it's the same thing (just old school)

(15,462 posts)the following is facile, and clear misrepresents the situation
Nope. Marketing is what NASCAR, Bud Light Super Bowl, and U.S. Marine Corps does.
What the paparazzi does is bait hunting on a game ranch. Kinda different things.

(7,540 posts)but it is easy to find blatant examples of racism toward Duchess Meghan.
In addition, Harry has been very clear that the obsession by the tabloid press caused his mother's death.
So racism and physical danger seem pretty big motivators to make some changes.
In addition, Harry is pretty far down the line of succession, so this should not be such a big deal.
Should he have talked it over with his father and grandmother first as part of a process....well, yes. Any family would expect that kind
of involvement over such a big change.
But again, I am not British, so my opinion is just that...mine.

(51,267 posts)We didn't like how the conservative press treated the Obamas either. Everything Barack, Michelle, or Malia or Sasha did was supposedly very scandalous. But completely different treatment of our porn star president and his nude model wife.
Prince Harry's marriage to a mixed race American got more bad press than his pedophile uncle's abuse of young girls with Jeffrey Epstein. It's absolutely deplorable behavior.
Daily Mail is a favorite tabloid of Freepers and other conservative idiots who think the BBC and the Guardian are too liberal.

Queen Elizabeth Features Photos of Royal Family Members in Preview of Christmas Day Address
Noticeably absent from the queen's desktop gallery? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

An obvious slight.
We Americans are used to more egalitarian ways. I think Meghan's way of viewing the world reminds Harry of his mother and all the Royals' slights against her.
So, this was not just the press and tabloids but how Meghan was being treated by all the Royals themselves. Obviously Harry loves her very much - she reminds him a bit of his mom and her disregard for the palace's edicts.

(42,033 posts)Certain people in Britain see Meghan as an interloper and one who isnt a white person, which makes her a double interloper.
The Obamas were seen this way too. Remember that after the first inauguration all the Tea Party nuts were running around screaming that they wanted their country back. That was code for we dont want black people living in The White House!
Yeah, racism isnt going anywhere.

(7,637 posts)Cruel, aggressive, ravenous. They have been this way for decades. When we think our press is bad, just look at the way they have behaved over the years. I don't know the appropriate way for the royals or any others targeted with their venom to react, but they have abused "freedom of the press" for the most egregious reasons.

(10,412 posts)It is based on a 2014 play. In it William and Kate manipulate their way onto the throne. Prince Harry has a black British girlfriend who is told not to attend the coronation. Plus it is intimated that Harry is not the son of Charles. Harry desires to go out on his own to earn his way in the world. It is uncanny at times. The movie came out in 2017.

(37,748 posts)I caught it on my local PBS station as well.
A fascinating film using Shakespearean-style dialog right down to iambic pentameter and prose to really 'up' the dramatic tension.
Coming into the movie cold was a shock, as I've never seen the royal family placed into such a negative, yet plausible (?) light. Place the classic dialog and monologues on top of that and I was simply mesmerized for ninety minutes.
