Up to 10 GOP senators consider bucking Trump on war powers
By Alexander Bolton - 01/14/20 06:00 AM EST
As many as 10 Republican senators are considering bucking President Trump on a resolution that would limit his ability to take military action against Iran.
The increasing number is the latest sign of growing GOP frustration over the Trump administrations justification for the drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) is circulating a bipartisan resolution that would direct Trump to remove U.S. forces from any hostilities against Iran within 30 days of its enactment.
GOP Sens. Mike Lee (Utah) and Rand Paul (Ky.) have already voiced their support for the measure, and Kaine says about eight more Republicans, including Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Todd Young (Ind.) and Mitt Romney (Utah), are reviewing it.
Probably about 10, Kaine said when asked about the number of Republicans who could vote to rein in Trumps powers. Theres good discussion going on.
Lee said several Republicans are carefully weighing whether to back the measure, adding that it would not be unreasonable to say that there might be a group of 10 who should be considered potential candidates to vote for it.

I suspect it will be the same here - and, even if they can get to 67 votes in the Senate, doubtful the more radicalized House GOP will give Pelosi the 60 or so votes she would need to make her margin veto proof in the House.

As compromised as he and they are trump will threaten, pressure, bribe them, or use intimidation to get them doing what he wants, just like putins doing to him now.

(10,055 posts)It wont happen, but I can dream. Senators like Lamar Alexander and Mitt Romney have nothing to lose. I would like to see the sham vote for acquittal to be under 50 senators. Two other Republican senators are retiring (Enzi of Wyoming and Roberts of Kansas). They have nothing to lose either because both are elderly and unlikely to enter politics again. It would be nice to see at least a few people stand up for the rule of law.
