(22,389 posts)The backlash to gun control in Virginia is being fueled by conspiracy theories and misinformation, and some observers worry that the escalating rhetoric may spark violence.
When Democrats won control of Virginias state government for the first time in 26 years in November 2019, they pledged to pass a series of standard gun control laws, including universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. The agenda was no surprise: state Democrats had run for office on a platform of gun violence prevention, backed by funding from national gun control groups

Some of these activists have warned of violence if Democrats push forward with gun control. Multiple Democratic lawmakers have reportedly received threats, including death threats. At heated public meetings across the state and in long social media comment threads, some gun rights supporters are openly discussing the possibility of civil war. Many have warned of the need to fight back against tyranny or have compared Democratic lawmakers to the British forces during the revolutionary war. I really do think we may be on the brink of another war, one speaker told a crowd of at least 800 people in Pulaski county, the Roanoke Times reported.
The swift expansion of local pro-gun organizing in Virginia has also attracted the attention of national anti-government militias and white supremacist groups, who have glommed on to the grassroots movement, hoping to use it as a potential flashpoint that could lead to civil war and social breakdown, according to an analyst at the Anti-Defamation League, which monitors extremist groups.

I've watched this for a while. Sound like Van Cleave started something (for money) that he lost control of.

RICHMOND, Va. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) declared a State of Emergency ahead of Monday's planned pro-gun rally on Capitol Square.
According to Northam's statement, "Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend."
All weapons, including guns, will be prohibited from the Capitol grounds. The declaration will be in effect from Friday, January 17 at 5 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5 p.m.

Declared out of an abundance of caution, or is there a credible threat??

(182,861 posts)They have been hot and heavy here getting meaningless "Sanctuary" bills passed in the localities. Of the 95 counties and 38 cities somewhere between 70-100 have passed these at Board meetings.
The CDL is pretty new and they are the REALLY HARD CORE ones you see. Please contribute to the cause by giving us money.

They aren't going to spend a single dime in the city. ....yeah good luck parking your car. Numbers in attendance may be decreased because someone has to stay in the turnip truck if they don't want to pay for parking.
