CNN)About half of Americans say the Senate should vote to convict President Donald Trump and remove him from office in the upcoming impeachment trial (51%), according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, while 45% say the Senate should vote against conviction and removal.
Nearly seven in 10 (69%) say that upcoming trial should feature testimony from new witnesses who did not testify in the House impeachment inquiry. And as Democrats in the Senate seek to persuade at least four Republican senators to join them on votes over allowing witnesses in the trial, the Republican rank and file are divided on the question: 48% say they want new witnesses, while 44% say they do not.
The poll is the first major national telephone poll since the articles of impeachment were sent to the Senate, formally launching Trump's trial there. They are also the first such poll results since Soviet-born businessman Lev Parnas, an associate of Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani, publicly implicated the President in the Ukrainian pressure campaign during a series of television interviews.

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)Suddenly the views or will of the people would make a difference? What, do we think we have representatives somewhere who would be staunch supporters who legislate in favor of the common good?
That hilarity aside, that does help cast a shadow of doubt on the moneyed, party above and over the country, people and constitution critters who are exchanging their own benefits for doing their jobs properly and as per their oaths.
Hey, what's an oath anyway, to somebody without values, character or common decency. Just words. Which does call into question the caliber of people who have infested our Senate, in particular. Bed bugs? Well, the only difference is the suck the blood of the poor, the weak, the common man, figuratively and all the time.

(13,776 posts)It's hard to be patient while this all plays out, but there's a difference between impeachment and the actual trial. I know the entire country won't be glued to their TVs, but our numbers can't help but go up and the GOP's can't help but go down once even more people pay attention.

(46,227 posts)The impeachment trial will be televised. It will be on all of the news channels and probably on the broadcast networks and C-SPAN. However, as was the case with the Clinton impeachment, the networks will not have their own cameras present - they will be transmitting the SEnate's own feed. And as was the case with the Clinton trial, there may be occasions when the Senate goes into closed session, which will not be televised.

(24,906 posts)which is no surprise, but the interesting number is an almost even split on Independents. That's enough to be a threat to republicans in some states.

(17,580 posts)I suspect the "not Trump" Rs are now self-identifying as Indies, maybe even a few as Dems. I think you are correct, these numbers should scare incumbent Rs because they do include establishment type Rs who would normally vote for down ticket Rs.
