WASHINGTON (AP) Chief Justice John Roberts drew little attention to himself in the beginning 12 hours of his first impeachment trial. But it was just before 1 a.m., as tempers on the floor had started to wear thin, that he reminded senators, House impeachment managers and President Donald Trumps defense team who was in charge.
I think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and the presidents counsel in equal terms to remember that they are addressing the worlds greatest deliberative body, Roberts said, after a particularly tense exchange between House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and the presidents lawyers.
Roberts asked them to avoid speaking in a manner and using language that is not conducive to civil discourse.
He did not say what prompted his comments, but they came after Nadler told senators that voting to deny certain witnesses in the trial, as many GOP senators had, was a treacherous vote and a vote against the United States. Trumps defense team then said Nadler should be embarrassed and should apologize to the president and the American people.

(4,572 posts)There's this video game that had a "Fart in a Jar" as an item. Lets you jump really high.
But I never thought to say "go fart in a jar" until just now.

(82,849 posts)But Roberts, ever the quisling, has to admonish both sides even though only one side transgressed.

(33,310 posts)Nadler responded, reasonably, and Roberts admonished "both sides".
Including the absurdity "World's Greatest Deliberative Body" should have been a sarcastic shot at the Senate's utter undemocratic uselessness, but it probably wasn't. Roberts comes across like a goober.

(82,849 posts)Even the NBA and NHL have figured out how to punish instigators more severely than responders. Roberts is still at the pro wrestling referee stage.

(33,310 posts)Roberts thought he was funny referencing "Pettifogging", but that's precisely what GOP Senators do every time they open their mouths. It wasn't funny.
Sekulow was out of line attacking Nadler.
