The difference between the two parties is this: The Democrats feel that the things that Trump did rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors. The Republicans don't. And they are concerned that if this goes through and Trump is removed, EVERY president will face impeachment.
So, that's it! The difference between the two parties is this: Republican's tolerance level for corruption, bribery and unbecoming behavior is HIGHER than that the expectations than Democratic expectations. They are definitely thinking of the long-term ramifications, because they want to be able to operate the way Trump is operating.
Why should we be surprised? They have been playing it over the edge since the eighties. Trump was just the next logical step. We're just now beginning to react offensively.
