?Navajo Democrats meet at the Kayenta, AZ, Chapter House to work on plan to defeat Trump.
Navajo and Apache Tribal members are using new technology to systematically canvass their Reservations -- which are the size of West Virginia and Connecticut to turn out the voters needed to defeat Trump and elect Mark Kelly to the U.S. Senate.
Without Arizona, Trump has no path to victory in the Electoral College.
Field teams on large Western reservations have been handicapped in the past because of a lack of addresses and geo-codes. They are used in off-Reservation areas to produce canvassing maps needed for effective door-to-door voter registration and get-out-the-vote work.
The situation on reservations changed dramatically when Navajos began using Google Plus Codes to identify every home on the Utah portion of their land. They used the fine-grained canvassing technique to win two of the three seats on the San Juan County, Utah, County Commission, and then used the method again to defeat an anti-Native referendum to change the countys form of government. The successful Utah strategy is now being used in Arizona because its 11 Electoral Votes could determine the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
How Plus Codes Work
If you find your home, or another building, on Google Maps, you can tap the location to drop a pin on the map. The pin will have a code, such as 43FG+44, which can be Googled to find the location. Somewhat similar to telephone area codes, if you are a long ways from the location, you may need an additional identifier, such as Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona, in case this same short code is used elsewhere in the world.
Teams are working to locate every dwelling on the Navajo and Apache Reservations in Arizona and make sure the residents are registered to vote. Traditional addressing systems miss many Natives for two reasons: (1) The work of rural addressing on tribal lands is moving at a glacial pace and is far from complete. (2) Many Tribal members live in storage sheds, tents or even traditional brush huts that are denied regular addresses because they do not meet even minimal building code requirements.
More good info at link. I can't find the DU discussion we were having a few days ago about this problem of having no address. This seems like a workable solution. So, I assume rethugs will do their best to shoot it down. The bold face emphasis is mine.

(58,656 posts)Good to see this happening, so that the people get their right to vote supported.
Not sure how vital AZ is in the grand scheme, but every state we can move blue is a good thing.
Trump won by razor thin margins. We should be able to GOTV and overcome that in 2020.

(5,801 posts)especially because the pukes who control the AZ statehouse did this:
When people dont get mail at their homes, how is this going to work? asked Patty Ferguson-Bohnee, the faculty director of the Indian Legal Program at Arizona State Universitys law school. The census data shows that only one in four homes on the reservation have access to cars and theres not great infrastructure or public transportation, so its likely someone else is going to bring your ballot back to town. Are those people going to be felons?

Not even to mention the Senate race there.

(10,303 posts)What 3 Words. Generates a 3 word sentence based on a 3 meter by 3 meter square.
Examples: Bigger.drama.dollar is where El Moron presently has an encampment and needs to be removed from there ASAP, and sent back to impairee.lows.transitional ... Stays.same.really is the US Capitol building. Bolstered.clad.ticket is where I'm picking up a trailer tomorrow.
The UK emergency services also use it as a means of identifying location, so if you call 999 and say you need help and you're at hiking.mining.digs the London Ambulance Service would be able to find where on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace you are.
No reason why this can't be used as an official address for anyone.

(13,991 posts)that if Trump is doing badly enough to lose AZ, hell likely also lose the other important swing states. Losing Arizona would most definitely be the icing on the cake.

(54,379 posts)No, we dont consult every Friday. He was wondering if I could send another contribution. I was with a mutual acquaintance in Washington, so I had to call him back. He is in a good financial position against McSally, but Arizona Democrats are under no illusions about Republican voter suppression efforts. They know it is in place and they know it will happen. But because they know about the Republican voter fraud efforts, and they are being implemented, they are also taking counter-measures, and intensifying GOTV efforts specifically set to counter Republican suppression of voter rights.

(19,956 posts)If not, I would highly recommend it, and actually I got the audible audio book because it's actually Rick's voice reading the book. Do you think his book/views would be ignored BECAUSE it's him, amongst the Democratic hierarchy ? I thought his suggestions made perfect sense (some were downright devious), not least the notion of flooding key districts with anti vote suppression lawyers.

Somewhere in Hell Nixon is happy that at least he is not the most evil corrupt person ever to be President.

(56,828 posts)Jan Brewer basically mocked Democratic efforts to get Latin and Native Americans out to vote because their turnout rates are generally much lower than it is for White and African American voters. (White & AA voters turn out around 80+% of registered voters, while Latin, Asian and Native American voters are typically a bit under 60%)
