Bolton has a history of being a crazy, vengeful prick (though he has always been patriotic, you don't find accounts of him outing American diplomats). So if Trump freezes Bolton's book to protect himself, who knows what will happen, but I doubt that Bolton will be kissing Trump's rear.

It's completely consistent with how McConnell and the R Senators have been acting. Mitch is focused on November; he knows he has to protect those vulnerable R senators from left-leaning states or he'll lose his majority and his power. If he knew what was in Bolton's book he would be planning for it to come out before the election and laying cover against the revelation of its contents, but it seems to have taken him completely by surprise. I can see the WH keeping it from him simply because they hide everything from everyone by habit. Trump doesn't give a rat's ass about McConnell, which is kind of stupid because without McConnell Trump has no cover against another impeachment. We know he thinks he'll win the next election so you think he'd also care about that, but he only cares about himself and thinks the divine streak of luck which has always protected him will continue its work no matter who he screws along the road.
