I never thought I could dislike a politician more than Ronald Reagan.

I didn't think I could flat-out hate any politicians more than His Pathetic Little Chimperial Majesty and Darth Cheney.
Then came the two cynical, greedy, ass-headed, smirking, overprivileged fascistic sacks of syphilitic monkeyshit that are Romney and Ryan.
As Will Pitt said a few days back, we must break them over our electoral knee and smash them.
Forward.

We need to do more than elect Obama, we need to break the Republican party and grind it to dust. Make it a footnote in history books, a museum display that people can take their kids to, point, and say "That's what will happen if you don't eat your broccoli!". Make it disappear like a bad nightmare in the morning. Not just make history. Make THEM history. I want to never again hear the words "The Republican candidate for President...".
Obama/Biden 2012!

/tears up world domination plan.
My dream? Follow Iceland's example- jail the people responsible for the financial crash- ALL of them- and make sure it's trumpeted as loudly as possible. Reinstate and strengthen the regulations on financial industries and fund regulatory agencies well enough that they are not redundant and can function effectively. Reinstate the tax rates on the wealthy, get rid of private and corporate loopholes. Reclassify all churches as standard charities; mandate that 70% of all income beyond what is required to maintain the property and a reasonable number of staff to go back out into the community every year in charitable work. Use some of the money now back in circulation from all this to fund startup business programs and business or vocational training across the country for whoever wants it. Throw in some of Europe's little "luxuries" like state-sponsored child care and a public option. And stop treating shooting at people in other countries as a fantastic career opportunity.
Changing thinking takes time, and by that I mean generations worth. Assume there will always be a percentage of the current voters age 25+ that just won't, and focus most of that effort on the younger generations. Best way I can see to do that is to give them the best possible life we can, and make sure they understand how they got it and why they have it. That means a good education with good teachers and fixed standards (this means: no, you may not pollute our science classes with a mythology you can't prove and you WILL teach critical thinking and yes class size DOES matter) and a stable home life where they're not hungry all day or exhausted from working their own job to help support their family and doing 4 hours of homework on top of that. Give them interesting things to think about and do, and a good environment to do it in. Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine so they get actual information to work with. And FFS give them proper sex ed so they can enjoy all this without toting around an infant at 15 or remembering to take their AIDS meds! I would like to see the next teacher who does the "spit in a glass" lesson with their class barred from teaching ever again.
That would be a good start. But I'll take that castle and minions, too, if it's still going. Same result, either way.

(119,787 posts)I remember watching the Watergate hearings, and cheering loudly while watching that asshole's resignation speech on TV. In fact, I kept that little black & white TV as a souvenir. After he resigned I was so relieved, assuming we'd never have such a douche as a president ever again.
But then there was Ronald Reagan. By his second term I was starting to miss Nixon, just a little bit.
Bush I was more annoying than truly loathsome, but I was very glad when Clinton handed him his ass.
Bush II, however, was even worse than Nixon or Reagan. He was far dumber than Nixon and more craven and cowardly than either of them. When his second term was over and he slithered back to Texas I thought, once again, that he was the worst possible president and we'll never see a worse one. And Cheney, who was almost certainly calling the shots most of the time, is pure evil.
Had John McCain been elected I don't think he would have been worse than Bush - though he'd have been pretty bad - but holy moly, did we dodge a bullet! If he had won and the strain of the job did him in, Sarah Palin's presidency would have been horrific beyond comprehension.
Fast forward to 2011 and the GOP primaries. Every last one of them was a terrifying mix of stupidity, lunacy and evil. Even Bush II started to look almost normal compared to these mutants. Romney and Ryan prove that the GOP has become utterly debased. It is not a legitimate political party any more. I don't know what it is, but it scares me.

(33,688 posts)He was an old union guy and despised Nixon. I was a long-haired dope-smoking 17 year old and we both enjoyed seeing that weasel suffer. Dad had told me that he'd find a way to get me to Canada if there was any danger of my being drafted but it never came to that.
The Repukes have mutated into some horrifying, malevolent interplanetary virus like something out of Plan 9 From Outer Space or Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I can't believe that I have seen this kind of insanity in my lifetime. The assortment of kooks, psychopaths, fly-eating dingbats, racists and flat out lunatics that was the Repuke primary field left me boggled. Not a one of these people with the sole exception of Jon Huntsman - who seems like a civil and rational adult, and you saw what happened to him - would ever have been taken seriously as a candidate for park commissioner in a one-horse town only 25 years ago yet there they were.
McCain's disastrous pick of Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods seemed to unlock the door to the dungeon where all the even crazier people were locked up, and the flatulent, belching and wheezing orcs came boiling out of that dungeon like raw crude out of a broken oil pipe in the Gulf. Now they're in the middle of the dinner party, scaring the cat half to death, taking bites out of the dog and dropping boot-sized turds in the corner. And no one knows how to get rid of them. Their level of discourse, if such it can be called, sounds like Beethoven's Ninth if Ludwig van had composed it for an orchestra composed of jackhammers, rabid raccoons and the local insane asylum's kazoo and anvil band.
This collection of troglodytic mouth-breathers, duck-fuckers, greedheads, and evolutionary throwbacks, immune to facts or reason, have scared me badly, really badly and they cannot be permitted to get within a parsec of the White House. The late, great Hunter S. Thompson once said that when the going gets weird the weird turn pro. What has happened to this country would have sent him on a Wild Turkey and Ibogaine bender for six months.
I truly fear for the future of thie country. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are leading the charge, but we have to stand staunchly and forthrightly behind them with all our might.

Actually, I don't think they really liked either one. They knew they were all dummies and could be manipulated to do anything they wanted...like starting wars and oil grabs. I think they voted for Bush because they actually wanted Cheney.

(14,177 posts)Right now between 36,000 and 45,000 people die in the US that don't have access to affordable health care. Seniors that lose medicare will die. They would have no problem cutting food stamps that millions of Americans rely on, most of them children. There is no doubt they will start another war, the next one could go nuclear, they think bombs are fun. In short they would make GW look like a compassionate conservative. It is our job to make sure GW remains the worst president in history.

Maybe if he's elected, and I pray (and do everything else in my power to ensure that he won't be) Mitt will end up being worse than Nixon. But for now he's hot air, not action. And for that reason alone, comparing the two is ridiculous.
