(562 posts)...almost as if the word shouldn't apply? Maybe I read that wrong.
In general, if you don't know the actual people that make the food you buy, it's going to be owned by larger scale companies. The economies of scale apply to agriculture too.

(562 posts)Was it surprising to find out that the larger organic brands are owned by ag conglomerates?

I think educating people on what exactly organic means is EXTREMELY important. Too many people buy something labeled "organic" and apply all sorts of misguided assumpetions to it.
But seriously, what was the point you were trying to make? Was it just an educational thing?

(28,552 posts)... did any of you hear that "report" on NPR Morning Edition a few days ago about organic food?
It basically said "there's no difference". It said that scientists have not established that low levels of pesticides cause human harm. It claimed that nutrient difference were negligible.
IMHO the report was total bullshit and further indication of the corporate sellout nature of NPR. ADM/ConAgra much?
I will say this. The science for establishing improved healthfulness for organic vegetables might not be there yet. But there is no question whatsoever about the taste and palatability. I can always tell the difference and I'm sure most other people can too.

(562 posts)and there's a thread on it here at DU.
edit: what the study was really focusing on was the difference in nutrition, of which there is none that can be scientifically proven. The pesticide stuff wasnt really a part of the actual study but what theyre saying about a lack of scientific proof for alarmist reactions to any pesticide use is largely true, it just isnt there.

(28,552 posts).... to tell me not to eat chemicals.
Whether it increases my chances of cancer by .000001 % or 0.02%, I'd prefer to avoid it.
And frankly, I don't believe there is any practical way to run a study that would provide any real answers. Too many variables, too long term, etc.

(562 posts)Your arguments sound eerily similar to tea baggers talking about climate change.

(1,695 posts)Come from my garden. After that we just buy whatever regular veggies & fruit the supermarkets selling really. I have long suspected that alot of the organic food market was bullshit advertising. Just the cynic in me. I'm sure there are trustworthy brands. But I honestly don't care.
