You just know...
when you are on the side of right. It's an inner knowledge. The right side of history. The right side of ethics.
Even if others don't come along with you, you know when you've done right.
It can be cold comfort. Especially in the face of oppression, lies, bullying. Especially when calling out the prevailing power structure.
Maybe there will be no reward. Maybe only the truth-seeking few will also know it, see it. Maybe it will be and remain unacknowledged. Maybe history won't even see it. Doing right is - must be - its own reward. Finding fellows is an unexpected gift.
Ultimately, the good that comes from it is both knowing in your heart of hearts that you followed your conscience; you can sleep at night. And putting a little more truth, a little more justice, out into the ether.
