'Two very interesting teams': Donald Trump doesn't know who's playing in the Super Bowl

Donald Trump, relatable man of the people, beloved of diner customers throughout The Heartland, does not know who is playing in the Super Bowl. And despite his vast experience in pretending he’s an expert on things he knows nothing about, he can’t even hide it.

Asked about his preference in the game, Trump said, “Well, I love them both, let's just say. But I will tell you, some two very interesting teams and interesting players, some really great players. And it's going to be hopefully a great Super Bowl.”

No, this doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Senate Republicans are letting the man off the hook for trying to obtain foreign interference to win an election. His administration is taking food assistance away from people who need it to survive, relaxing restrictions on the use of landmines, accelerating climate change, and so much more. He personally is emboldening white supremacists and rapists everywhere. He embraces authoritarian leaders around the globe.

So his ignorance about who’s in the Super Bowl and his clumsy attempt to hide it is barely even a footnote on the hour in which it became obvious. But it’s also another potent reminder that truly we live in the stupidest time, that this level of ignorance not just about policy but about the basics of U.S. culture can somehow be set aside in the portrayal of Trump as someone whose appeal comes from anything but the vicious bigoted impulses he stokes. No one really thinks he’s likable or just like them or that he knows what their lives are like. His supporters are fervently in love with him, and there’s no possible explanation but the racism and nationalism and misogyny and bullying and, possibly, to a small extent, envy over his crass deployment of the wealth he pretends he didn’t just inherit. That is what it is, and what it is is sickening, but what’s truly gross is the media’s willingness to pretend that his appeal is anything else.

"I'm going to give [buying the Bills] a heavy shot," Trump told Tim Graham of the Buffalo News in April 2014. "I would love to do it, and if I can do it I'm keeping it in Buffalo."

A little more than a year later, Trump was again left looking at the NFL from the outside.

"I bid a billion dollars, all cash on the table," Trump told Sports Illustrated in September 2015. "He [owner Terry Pegula] bought it for a billion-two, I believe, although they say it was a billion-four. I think he got it for a billion‑two."

An NFL source familiar with Trump's bid said he didn't get the team because there was serious doubt among other owners if Trump had the money to purchase the Bills.

The belief is that Trump has held a grudge ever since.

In 1983, Trump instead settled for buying a USFL team, the New Jersey Generals. As Pearlman reports in one of the most fascinating insider anecdotes of his book, after committing to buy the USFL team Trump arranged a private meeting with then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. He made clear to Rozelle that the USFL did not matter to him and that what he really wanted was an NFL team. According to a colleague of the USFL marketing man who was in the room for the meeting, Rozelle told Trump at the end of the meeting, “As long as I or my heirs are involved in the NFL, you will never be a franchise owner in the league.”

I think it's a shame how all the russiapublicans are using a senile old man to get what they want. He will do anything to get people to like him. My father was senile so I know a little bit about it. If his kids loved him they wouldn't want him to make a fool of himself. But they're just like the russiapublicans, in it for what they can get.

...out of respect for his declining faculties and his dignity as a man. But they are not a normal family, and I think love and self-sacrifice are alien concepts to them all. It's all transactional -- everything in their lives.

Even in this decayed condition, however one defines it (and many DUers with very aged parents can spot symptoms a mile away, as can medical professionals), Trump remains extremely useful to an awful lot of people in this country and around the world who want money and power and who would rejoice at the destruction of our democracy.

We've seen this with a few other wealthy families, but never with such disastrous consequences for the nation.

Just so you know, the two teams who will be taking the field tomorrow are the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions.

We have it on good authority that if the Bengals win, they would enjoy Whoppers from Burger King.

We are also aware that if the Lions win, they prefer Quarter Pounders from the McDonald’s in Union Station.

- - - - -

For the sports-impaired among us, the only way the Lions are going to make it to the Super Bowl is if the earth opened up and swallowed every other team in their conference. As for the Bengals, I don’t think even that would work.
