Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI expect that everyone in the country knows if they want Trump again or not.
I doubt that the campaigns will change anyone's allegiance.
That means the next president depends on turnout, not changing minds.
Whichever side is the most anxious about the future will probably turnout in the biggest numbers.
In the last election Trump terrified his base with fairy tales of evil monsters rampaging the countryside so they swarmed the polls.
Hillary supporters confidently Assumed she would win so many didn't show up.
I expect that our side is pretty scared for the future this time so Based on this metric it would appear we would be in good shape.
But expect Trump to come up with some new horror to scare his people to the polls too.
It will all depend on turnout.

(6,679 posts)I agree with you. This country has gotten so divided along party lines in a way that has zero to do with policy. It's more like a football game. Hopefully the sentiment in November will be the same as the one in this Superbowl... anyone but Tom Brady...
I'm probably wrong, but I'm convinced this election will be "anyone but Trump". Conservatives who aren't MAGAs might stay home. Democratic supporters certainly will show up. We can snag the swing voters with some work.
Thank you for your post.... k & r.

(16,926 posts)A friend told me the other day that the failed impeachment (I corrected him - he was impeached!) will have more people voting for Trump. I disagree. There is no level of pity for what IQ45 "suffered" because of the impeachment and trial, he continues to be an idiot and a disaster, and who knows how much more evidence will surface regarding however many more questionable or illegal activities he and his band of thieves have committed.
Yes, GET OUT THE VOTE is THE most important thing - and make sure those that want to vote CAN vote!

(15,536 posts)In my experience, I think it's the younger generation that cares more about climate change than us older folks. Don't get me wrong. I have always cared about the environment since that very first Earth Day. However, a lot of older folks aren't as focused on climate change as the younger generations are. My last ten years of employment were at universities and another institution of higher education. At each of them I had students who worked for me. I was pleasantly surprised that most of them would talk about environmental issues, and they felt very strongly about it. Some of them were going into fields related to environmentalism. Two of them were even self-identified as republicans, though this was prior to Trump.
My point is that I think if we can get the younger people out in massive numbers, we will have no problem winning everything. We need to court their votes. They're busy people and we have to try to make it as easy as possible for them to register and to convince them that it's their futures that will be impacted.

(21,596 posts)or else Democrats will not win congressional, state and local races.
There was a huge problem with undervoting in the last two presidential elections here in Georgia, for example. People were so excited about Barack Obama, yet had no information or seeming interest in or recognition of the importance of the other elections and candidates on the ballot.
So, GOTV but make sure to educate about being an informed voter and voting the entire Democratic ballot, as well as special questions, referendums and non-partisan races.

(15,536 posts)But I try to keep in mind that we do have to just get them interested and seeing the value in voting first and then we've usually got a voter for life. I try not to see youth through the lens of my own experience because I was one of the ones who was very interested in politics from the time I was about 16. The rest of my peer group at that time - not so much. They'd get excited about a presidential election but nothing else. As we got older and had children we evolved into caring more about school bond issues, library issues, etc.
I just want more of them to register and get to the polls because most young people are going to not vote for republicans and that's a good thing.
