Best-selling author Stephen King has slammed Republicans and called for the ouster of his state's senator Susan Collins of Maine predicting that the GOP lawmaker will vote to acquit President Donald Trump in the ongoing impeachment trial.
King, whose well-known books have been developed into films and television series, has been a frequent critic of Trump and Republican lawmakers. The author was even previously blocked by the president on Twitter. As a Maine resident, King has strongly criticized Collins on multiple occasions in the past.
On Friday, the Republican majority of the Senate voted against calling for additional witnesses and evidence in the president's impeachment trial, despite Democrats' urging. Collins, as well as GOP Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, voted with Democrats to hear from further witnesses. It's unclear whether Collins and Romney plan to vote to acquit or remove Trump from office.
"Whitewash. Shameful," King tweeted on Saturday, referring to the impeachment trial. He then went on to predict that Collins would vote to acquit the president along with her Republican colleagues, calling for her to be voted out of office as she faces re-election this year.

(40,915 posts)Susan Collins was a 'right time, right place' candidate...
She was in a three person primary race and so far back she could not even see the other two candidates' tail lights.
The millionaire candidate sponsored an investigation of the evangelist candidate who got run out of a southern state because he was boinking his twelve year old babysitter.
The millionaire denied his involvement but the public turned against both him and the evangelist, leaving Susan Collins as the sole remaining candidate.

(912 posts)I didn't realize Collins had a residence in Bangor. As I recall, she was from the "county" and her only claim to fame prior to getting elected senator was that she was chief of staff or something similar, for her predecessor Olympia Snowe. (And come to think of it, Snowe and her husband, ex-Maine gov (pubbie) John McKernan have been totally silent about any of the pubbie ratfucking of the last 20 years or so - excuse the coarse language, but that is exactly what the R power players have been doing to this country.) I don't think she ever actually held any elective office prior to being jumped to senator. And I remember the nasty primary battle that ultimately got her there, and her two term only promise.
Mr. King and his wife Tabitha have always been highly regarded in the Bangor area and have given generously over the years to the city, their alma mater UMO and numerous other causes/projects in the area and elsewhere. Also remember their house with the cool gothic iron fence that surrounded it. I haven't read any of Mr. King's novels in years, but have always loved any commentary he adds to current events. The man certainly has a way with words. (As an aside, I graduated from Hampden Academy in 1973 - King was an English teacher at that public school in about 1969-71, where I had him for a class or two. This was the "location" of his first big novel "Carrie". The Bangor area was the setting for a number of his early novels which definitely added an element of creepiness to the stories for me!!!)

(8,002 posts)Republicans have been reassured by Fox News and Trump that this was all a witch hunt so the mountain of evidence that Trump did what he has been charged with has blindsided them and left them twisting in the wind. They just can't come to grips with it because they have already promised Moscow Mitch that he has their vote. To back out now would bring on a primary challenge in the next election and the Trump minions would turn on them as they have been blindsided by this too. So the Republican Senators are falling in line behind Alexander who said, yes, Trump did it but that a quid pro quo does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense. So, why don't they ask CJ Roberts whether a proven quid pro quo would rise to the level of an impeachable offense. But watching Roberts I would expect that he would simply refer it back to the Senators. The problem with many Republicans is that the undeniable truth is that Trump did it but they can't pull the trigger and vote yes because they can't accept removal as the only option with a yes vote. So they squirm and say these ridiculous things that raise the bar above the crime committed (Alexander) or say they will engage in jury nullification and vote for acquittal even though they know he committed the crime (Rubio). Apparently they think enough Americans are stupid enough that they can get away with it - or that it is their only option.
But there is a flip side that the Republicans are ignoring. They only talk about the perceived things that would happen if Trump was convicted. They have given no thought about what will happen when they acquit an obviously guilty President. How far will Trump run with that ball with an acquittal? And what will be his response to those that voted "yes". They have to know that he will be punitive. And he has his hatchet man Barr that is more than willing to carry out his every punitive order. So, not only will these Republican Senators have to deal with the fact that they voted for a sham trial, they will have to deal with the crooked Trump lawyer that was an active partner in the very crime Trump is charged with - at least that is what the Bolton manuscript is claiming. In a regular court of law that would be a disbarment of the crooked attorney and a mistrial where you have to start all over again. America is screwed folks.
