Scientists fear the 'doomsday glacier' is in even more trouble than we feared

2/1/2020

A study by British and American scientists revealed that a massive sheet of ice known as the “doomsday glacier” is melting faster than experts previously believed—edging the world closer to a possible sea-level rise of more than 10 feet.

Researchers at New York University and the British Antarctic Survey drilled through nearly 2,000 feet of ice in the Thwaites glacier in West Antarctica, to measure temperatures at the 75-mile wide ice sheet’s “grounding line,” where the ice meets the ocean.

The water just beneath the ice was found to be 32º Fahrenheit—more than 2º above freezing temperature in the Antarctic region.

The findings have “huge implications for global sea level rise,” NYU scientist David Holland said in a statement.

The change is unstoppable now. Feedback loops have been engaged and the runaway is inevitable. Mitigating this disaster and attempting to adapt to a wildly changing and unpredictable planet is "Plan B". After that fails too, extinction is the end game.

We are already losing habitats and the base of the food chain globally...the consequences of which are mathematical certainties.

It is over because mankind never embraced the power of love over the love of power. RIP Jimi...we'll all be in that gentle good night soon enough...at least the music will be divine!

After Florida recount 2000, Iraq and Afghanistan 2002, Ohio 2004, Healthcare 2009-2010, Benghazi 2015, Merrick Garland 2016, Election Night 2016 (my previous low point), Trump/Mueller 2016 - 2018, Kavanaugh 2018, Trump Impeachment 2019 - 2020...all Democratic defeats to one extent or another, AND the total lack of policy and state-level efforts to reverse climate change beyond hollow speeches and rallies, I am spent. Beyond empty. Despondent. Finished.

Good luck in the future, I see none worth fighting for any longer. The sham trial for Impeachment, without so much as a single mass protest, strike or civil disobedience action tells me all I need to know. The game is over and rational thought lost to propaganda and lowest common denominator level discourse. Educating people on a global issue is not possible for a bunch of primates like homo sapiens a scant 100,000 years from the savannas and forests of Africa.

We never learned the essential lessons, despite so many proclaiming them and so much lip service paid to them - it does not matter what your neighbor has if you are happy with what you have and what you have covers the needs to live...food, water, shelter and above all else love.

A room with a dirt floor and no windows or view can be more satisfying to the soul than a palace over looking the Pacific Coast.
A simple meal of harvested crops and hand grown herbs can be as nourishing and enjoyable as a 5-star chef's latest creation.
A simple drink of cool water from a natural spring can be as hydrating as any "Smart Water" that sells for $5 and uses plastic containers that are killing the planet and the oceans and finding its way into the gut flora of ALL living beings.

This fight, the scale, the consequences, the futility of denial and the doom of continued inaction have overwhelmed my last bit of will to care any more. It all hurts too much and to see the constant glee and downright giddiness of the MAGA-hat wearing, Fox Propaganda watching fools just makes my soul ache too much. They win at "owning" me...their prize? We all die. Yippie...
