As many expected all along, Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman doesnt want to hear any witnesses during Donald Trumps
impeachment trial.
Sen. Rob Portman will vote to acquit President Donald Trump in a Senate impeachment trial that Sen. Sherrod Brown called a sham for not allowing more witnesses and documents.
But as the Senate prepared for its 51-49 late-afternoon vote that defeated a push to call additional witnesses, Brown, a Democrat, pushed for deliberations on Trumps guilt or innocence to be open so the public can watch.
Portman, in a statement announcing his plan to vote for acquittal, said Trumps asking Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden while delaying aid to the country was wrong and inappropriate but does not rise to the level of removal from office.
But Brown joined Senate Democrats in calling an acquittal of the president without the testimony of additional witnesses and the admission of other documents a sham. He planned to introduce a motion that would require deliberations be open to the public.
Portman, in also voting against additional witnesses, said allowing them would have delayed the trial for weeks if not months. He criticized the case made by House Democrats as flawed, saying that instead of calling additional witnesses and compelling them to testify through subpoenas, the House waited nearly a month to send its articles to the Senate.
