EDIT as of 2pm, 2/6/2020: I have to take a break from this project to fix some software I wrote for my son for his job as a teacher. AND my hubby's computer won't boot and our favorite fixit place has closed. I hope to get back to this senators project in a day or so.
Update: A neighbor put us on to a new repair guy who is going to replace the hard drive with a solid state drive, clone it (it wasn't totally dead) and get it done in 3 HOURS!!! for only $165. Boy, have hardware prices dropped in the last 10 years! I'm ecstatic because I've avoided a total crash which would have required restoring from backup and re-installing everything that I could find the installation for.
Still can't work on this senators project cuz I have to share my computer with hubby and fix son's application.
END EDIT
I have a spread sheet prepared to record the reasons for senators' votes. I can't watch all (or even most) of their speeches. But if you all would record the senators you see, we could get a complete count. Put the senator's name in the subject, and the numbers of their reasons in the body. If a new reason comes up, describe it and give it the next available number. I'll edit this OP accordingly. Obviously more than one number could apply to a senator. E.g. 6 and 7.
Actually, if any Democrat does NOT support one of the articles, would you highlight that?
When this is over, I'll put the spreadsheet in DropBox (or any other mechanism anyone wants to suggest that I can get it) and I'll convert it to text and post it here.
Thanks to Mersky for this link which lets you watch AND read transcripts.

Says the House failed to prove the case. Saying the bar of impeachment is being lowered, unprecedented and frivolous.
Only interested in waste, fraud, and abuse. Asked if Pres. Obama should have been impeached for Fast & Furious? Said the House made a mess and is looking for the Senate to clean up the mess.
Bitching about lack of whistleblower access by the Senate. Saying the House weaponized the whistleblower.
Said precedents of the past haven't been followed and we need no "new normal' for impeachment. Decision belongs to the voters. Time to get the Senate back to work for the people.
Voting "not guilty" on both articles.

What if the whistleblower WAS a flaming liberal or "never Trumper?" And? It doesn't change the facts, now does it...? Even if s/he was someone who was in on the scam and came down with a severe case of scruples, the facts won't change. So what's the big deal about knowing who said person is...???

Also, when the caller uses their cell phone there is no way the 911 operator can know the location of the call or the name of the caller. They have to ask.

(53,410 posts)I assume its going to take time. The information regarding the location of the needed police or paramedic aid is necessary and many times an unrelated person will call a theft or a crime or a needed emergency response and that person may be the one the police or paramedics need to initially talk to. But not always. The person calling 911 could be someone who received a call from the person needing the assistance who may be in another state or part of town.
This happened to me. My grandmother called me to say she thought she may have just had a stroke. I was too far to get to her quickly so I called 911 and her son who lived just around the block. He met the paramedics when they arrived. As it turned out my grandmother was fine when the hospital doctor checked her out. Needless to say my location wasnt important at all.

Said the Pres. acted in full knowledge pressuring Ukraine, and emboldened Russia. Will continue to put his own interests ahead of America's interest.
The House's argument made it impossible to ignore our Constitutional authority. Pres. defense didn't refute the articles just complained about the House process. No substantiative defense of the president's actions.
Has no doubts - said none of us should have any doubts about his guilt. Indisputable. Will we stand up for the institutions that secure our autonomy as a people. Trial is about freedom in our country, because if the pres feels he owes his office to a foreign country, then who does the Pres. truly serve.
No American is truly free if a Pres. is beholden to a foreign country.

No one is above the law, including the Pres. He did everything he could to cover up the truth. Pres. was provided multiple opportunities to prove his innocence, but he ignored them. WH refused to comply, threatened, and intimidated those who were subpoenaed. Common sense says that if Pres. top staff has evidence of his innocence, he would have insisted we hear from him. Alarmed at what Trump could do next week, next month, in November. I don't think any of this is OK. The people of Michigan don't think any of this is OK. The founders had no intention of living under a king. I have to wonder why so many of my Republican colleagues are so eager to give it a try.
Voting to convict and remove him from office.

Pres. defense is fiction because the pres. was not fighting corruption in Ukraine. He was causing it. Only reason funds were released because they got caught, not because they suddenly found a new respect for the people of Ukraine.
Let's consider the precedent that just getting over it sets. an acquital says it's OK for foreign interference in all elections or policy AND that it's OK to rig impeachment trials. Rig an election when there are no consequences.
Two simple questions: Pres. swears to protect and defend the Constitution. When he puts his own interest first and extorts a foreign govt for political gain, he's in violation of his oath.
Do we believe that this is a govt of the people, by the people, for the people. The Pres. defense assured us that it is not. If the Pres can cheat lie and commit crimes in office, it is a govt of by and for Donald Trump.
We have no choice. He is guilty. He must be convicted.

Eta2: 6, but still undecided and appealed for a censure vote (really only argued #6 items, imo)
Eta: Speaking to the gravity of making the decision of whether or not to impeach a pResident and convict in the senate. Remarks that it has not been a fair trial. Notes the republicans moving forward without documents and witnesses. Reiterating the Senates power to convict and remove.
Then starts complimenting both sides. Summarizes points from each side - noted the declassified transcript (which was a read out, not an actual transcript).
Remains undecided, then goes on to note:
- the call was not perfect
- pressuring Ukraine was wrong; threatening our democracy for a political favor
- if the pResident thinks its good for the country, then isnt impeachable is unacceptable
- no one is above the law
- not removing would further divide the country
Sees no path to the 67 votes to remove, rather a bipartisan majority would vote to CENSURE

Prides himself in working across the aisle. Since he took the position he has never dishonored his oath. Swore to do impartial justice. Framers believed the Senate was less likely to betray their oaths, less partial, ... Must do what is best for the nation. It calls on us to do what
Senate has failed to meet it's obligation to hold a fair trial and to do impartial justice. I supported Pres. Trump's calls. This was shortchanged by the leader. History will judge this senate harshly. Framer's gave the senate the solemn responsibility to make this judgement. House managers presented a strong case with overwhelming evidence.
Remains undecided on how he will vote.
1) It was not a 'perfect' call. No one should think what the Pres. did was right - regardless of party.
2) Most dangerous claim - that the Pres. is above the law. If it's good for the Pres., then it's good for our country.
3) Purpose of impeachment isn't to punish the Pres, but to protect the public. Is it better now for our country, or to wait for the decision of the people in November. Feels that removing him would divide the country more and that 67 votes would be impossible to get.
Suggested going for censure to unite the House and Senate Dems and Repubs. Quoting Sen. Byrd to come together to heal the open wounds. Put behind us the distrust and bitterness.

Weaponizing misinformation has become a campaign tool. Talking about honest and fair elections and how the Russians are trying to manipulate our elections, tarnish our democracy, and divide our nation. Said we are not the first act of this play. We must fight back against Russia or anyone interfering in our elections - and should be bipartisan. Seeking, requesting, accepting interference in a US campaign is wrong - it is illegal. Turning a blind eye in this case is enabling. What's not clear is all the pres. men who are helping him abuse this power, and how are they accomplishing this task for him. Where will the abuse stop.
Talks about Barr not being independent and their failure in appointing an AG.
John Bolton and Fiona Hill may be the people who stood up to the abuse of power and should be listened to.
I plan to work with colleagues on a bipartisan basis for better security and cyber security in our nation.

When I have been seeing the "doesn't rise to the level of", that seems to suggest that "1" category. Most of the 9s left it at "the process was flawed" - i.e., "rushed", "didn't go to court", etc)... ETA - and some of those 9s then went on into CT land and dismissed even the "process".

Pres. Trump went to great lengths to try to get the Ukrainian Pres. to help smear Joe Biden. After the power to declare war, the power of impeachment is one of the most important charges of the Senate. Every previous senate impeachment trial has included witnesses. Why wouldn't we want witnesses when we've used them in previous trials. On the articles of impeachment before us, I've listened to both the House Managers and the defense counsel for the Pres. I believe the Pres. abused his power.

What would be helpful to find Bill Moyer's quote that he summarized about the "demagogue President" being "the gravedigger of democracy"...

(4,980 posts)All 100 of us, every single one of us, are the jury. We took an oath to be impartial jurors. We all took an oath to be impartial jurors, just like juries in Ohio and across America. But to some of my colleagues, that just appeared to be a joke. The great journalist, Bill Moyers, summed up the past three weeks, What weve just seen is the dictator of the senate manipulating the impeachment process to save the demagogue in the White House whose political party has become the gravedigger of democracy.

But I saw on the chyron (chryon????) on CNN that GOP senators (plural!) think Trump has learned his lesson. Are there really others so tone deaf? If there are, I'm going to make a new category. ETA2 - I wrote here - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=12953979
Meaning it went beyond a "flawed" process and to the point where the "process" should have never even happened (regardless of whether it was flawed or not because "partisan" ).

There were a bunch of (R) speeches where they ranted and raved about "partisan!!111!! partisan!!11!!! partisan!!11!!!!!" and then proceeded to insert CT crap in there, etc. Some didn't even broach an idea of "innocence", "this should not be considered valid because 'partisan'".
