https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2020-02-03/brian-wilson-beach-boys-donald-trump-jr-huntingBeach Boys founding members Brian Wilson and Al Jardine alerted fans Monday that they have no part in an appearance later this week by a version of the group fronted by cofounder Mike Love at a trophy-hunting convention where Donald Trump Jr. will be the keynote speaker.
Loves touring edition of the Beach Boys, for which he holds the legal rights to the name, also includes longtime band member Bruce Johnston. They are slated to play Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, where hunting enthusiasts can arrange trips to hunt exotic animals. Trump Jr. and his brother, Eric, are longtime trophy-hunting supporters.
This organization supports trophy hunting, which both Al and I are emphatically opposed to, Wilson tweeted on Monday. Theres nothing we can do personally to stop the show, so please join us in signing the petition protesting the private event at Change.org.

(5,324 posts)The shit songs by the Beach Boys (Kokomo, Fun Fun Fun) were Mike Love.
The genius songs (Wouldn't It Be Nice, Good Vibrations, God Only Knows) were Brian Wilson.

It destroyed Brian. And all he came up with was like one line, supposedly.
Listen to him in interviews though, he always brings up When I wrote Good Vibrations... And completely shits on Smile.

(4,886 posts)I was not all that familiar with the whole back story on the Beach Boys. That film was really eye opening. It beautifully captured the musical brilliance of Brian as a composer. He got screwed over by so many people.
I am a huge fan now. He's a genius. And now gets more kudos for his stand on trophy hunting. Still a genius.

(4,886 posts)I'll never hear Beach Boy songs the same after this. It's absolutely brilliant how many levels of complexity he is hearing all at once - instrumental parts and harmonies, multilayered rhythms, multilayered vocals, plus the lyrics.
I am simply in awe. Thanks for posting this.

(9,174 posts)The first time was in May 1978. They really were the Beach Boys. Carl and Dennis were still alive, and Brian had (briefly) resumed touring, along with Love and Jardine. It was an amazing show, even if I did have to spend 2 1/2 hours standing because those in "festival" seating rushed the stage at the start of the concert.
The second time was probably 10-12 years ago after a minor league baseball game. It was Love, Jardine, Johnston and some guys. They played for about an hour, and it was a shadow of the first concert.
A trivia question: The Barry Manilow hit, "I Write the Songs" was actually written by Bruce Johnston.

Nobody knows what got underneath Mike Loves skin when the Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. It was only the third ceremony and they were getting in alongside the Beatles and Bob Dylan, so he could hardly feel his group was somehow getting dissed. But when he took to the podium, out came the most notorious speech in Hall of Fame history.
The Beach Boys did about 180 performances last year, he said. Id like to see the Mop Tops match that! Id like to see Mick Jagger get out on this stage and do I Get Around versus Jumpin Jack Flash, any day now. And Id like to see some people kick out the jams, and I challenge the Boss to get up on stage and jam.
At this point Paul Shaffer and his band kicked into Good Vibrations in an attempt to get him to stop, but Love wasnt quite done. I wanna see Billy Joel, see if he can still tickle ivories, he said. I know Mick Jagger wont be here tonight, hes gonna have to stay in England. But Id like to see us in the Coliseum and he at Wembley Stadium because hes always been chickenshit to get on stage with the Beach Boys.
It was a night of notable absences, with Diana Ross and Paul McCartney staying home due to feuds with their groups, but Mick Jagger was indeed in the audience. To put it mildly, the rest of the Beach Boys were horrified. Carl Wilson came up to me afterward, said Shaffer. He handed me his award and said, Our career is over.'
Longtime Beach Boys touring guitarist Jeff Foskett was on hand for the event. He wanted it to be a challenge, he told Rolling Stone in 2009. But it just came out wrong. In a 2013 interview with the Guardian, Love tried to explain himself. I hadnt meditated that morning, he said. It was so funny. Someone said to me: Hey Mike. Youre either meditating too much or not enough!'
Bob Dylan took the stage not long after the Beach Boys and delivered the line of the night. I want to thank Mike Love for not mentioning me, he said. I play a lot of dates every year, too. Peace, love and harmony is greatly important indeed, but so is forgiveness and we gotta have that too.
Ringo Starr, who will receive the Award For Musical Excellence at next years ceremony, was in the ballroom that night, but doesnt remember the speech. Yeah, he said. I dont ever listen to what he has to say.
