divide and conquer plus makes it much easier to explain strange results later ( "hey Democrats didn't win because <group X> didn't turn out like they did in 2012" or "Democrats lost because <group Y> abandoned them." ) you can build extended narratives around fictions like these, but first they must be planted in a rich soil of fertilized half-truths, then carefully tended through the spring blossoming season and summer fruiting months to be ready for harvest in November.
