(21,247 posts)but it got caught using bogus data in the 2008 primary/election. Gallup lost its respectability 15 years ago.
I get tired of posting this but polls are used for propaganda. I doubt that Trump's popularity is 40%. I laugh when polls come out.

(21,247 posts)my long term memory is better.
It had to do with a trend, I can't remember what the trend was but it was consistently falling 2% in each of the last several elections. Gallup not only didn't follow the trend it went the other way which skewed their prediction toward McCain, I believe.
Whatever it was, Gallup did the opposite of what was trending.

(34,661 posts)response. The Media Whores love these false Narrative pieces of Propaganda. And yes they had some respectability pre 2000,and even in that time frame, they tended to script their Polling Q&A in a very conservative manner.
As one team lead said, remember who's paying the freight.

(56,828 posts)sampled way too many Republicans
Easy to skew the results - I remember CNN doing it after the Biden/Ryan debate in 2012 - they sampled way more Republicans than Democrats and it came out as 50-50, a tie.

(30,613 posts)He's under-performing even among Russiapublican voters.
Repubs are 54% of the sample, but only 49% of the sample approve.
"Results are based on telephone interviews conducted January 16-29, 2020 with a random sample of 1,033
adults, ages 18+, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on this sample of
national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
For results based on the sample of -- 946 -- registered voters, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage
points at the 95% confidence level.
For results based on the sample of -- 443 -- Democrats and Democratic leaning independents, the margin of
sampling error is ±6 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
For results based on the sample of -- 527 -- Republicans and Republican leaning independents, the margin of
sampling error is ±5 percentage points at the 95% confidence levell".

(36,419 posts)I don't understand a media that enables a dictator-type who has expressed his disdain for the free press. Are their corporate masters also suffering from "it can't happen here?"

(4,490 posts)CNN is 43-53 from around the same time period. It's bad when they won't even cite their own poll in favor of the outlier.

No point in looking at these. No matter what they say we need to get out and vote. Not only ourselves but we each need to bring 10 people who would not otherwise vote.

(21,247 posts)I doubt that Trump's favorability is 40%. See my above post concerning Gallup. It is not a respected poll any longer.

(9,371 posts)Maybe polls do matter because in todays social media driven world so many people count on being able to read about what the majority opinion is or how like minded thinkers are leaning to make up their minds versus doing their own thinking??

(1,584 posts)Democrats and independents turn out if they feel like they have to. A lot of people thought Hillary had it in the bag and didnt bother. In Red states they figure why bother - then when they see they have a shot we see Colorado go blue. Virginia went blue. Arizona, Georgia and Texas are on the way. Mississippi and Alabama could actually be competitive if we could register and turn out all of the people who feel it is hopeless.

This is all about keeping people unsure and watching for the ratings and ad revenue.
Unless there is a major fix in, blob should have no chance in hell of winning re-election, the reason.... he has no gains over time in support, only losses?
There are so many ways to attack him in ad buys this should be a funny campaign ad season.
I watch so little TV though, I will be looking for them here!
/cheers!
SOTU was just to keep his dummies happy and in line?

On February 4 Approval was 43.4, Disapproval 52.1

(6,226 posts)Right or wrong say something interesting and it will be printed and reported. Hillery did not say much that was reported. She wasn't on TV enough. A candidate has to be on network TV. Talk shows. Has to be seen by more than people who can come to rallies. Trump knows that and uses it to his advantage. The person who runs against him will have to do way more and make printable remarks. Talk to anyone and everyone.
