They marched into the thriving black Tulsa neighborhood on May 31, 1921, with shotguns and Molotov cocktails. Some wore masks, while others proudly showed their white faces.
Over the next two days, the mob killed hundreds of African Americans, drove thousands more from homes and looted businesses before burning them to the ground.
The rampage, known as the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, is among the worst incidents of racial violence in American history and for nearly a century leaders throughout Oklahoma seemed determined to ignore it.
Now a reckoning is underway.
This week, Tulsa officials announced plans to excavate a plot of land that they believe is a mass grave containing many of the victims. The digging is scheduled to begin in April.

(4,664 posts)People are losing their minds over it. When the subject comes up on social media, the local newspaper and TV stations, the comments will make you spit fire. Add to that there has been an uptick in the amount of racist graffiti and literature that's being spread around the neighborhood. MTWA - Make Tulsa White Again is a common tagline. You see it in both white paint and green, green is said to indicate the Irish Mob, who have always been very active in Tulsa.
2 of my great aunts lived through it, I am very grateful that I heard first hand their accounts. They lived just W of the affected area at the time and believe the majority of bodies were burned. Some believe they were thrown in the river, yet others say they were thrown into ponds in 2 parks, but in my lifetime those were drained and nothing was found.
I hope they find the evidence for which they are looking.
