Mitt Romney may think he's taking a shot at POTUS. But any real damage he causes will in fact be to Senate Rs in tough races. Schumer's goal with all this was retaking the Senate. If he succeeds, he'll hopefully remember to send Romney a thank you.(my bold)

3. I would guess that the opposite is true ...

My guess is that the Senate will be harder to take if the GOPers convict and remove trumPutin. If Senate GOPers put party over country, we will have to remind people of all the other offenses they've committed, and the public doesn't have a long memory.
