By voting to acquit Trump, you now own his every crime, his every lie, his every cruelty, his every act of corruption.
For the past three years, we have heard rumblings from your side of the aisle, mutterings of your pResidents statements being unfortunate, his actions being inappropriate, his inane outbursts being something to be laughed off, instead of admitting they are demonstrative of his total unfitness for the office he holds.
Your vote to exclude witnesses and documents from Trumps trial was appalling enough, as you chose to ignore the Constitution, the rule of law, and the will of the people in order to keep the truth from being exposed.
But with your vote to acquit, you went a step further. You chose to not only excuse a pResident you know to be corrupt, but to embolden him. And you did so knowing his future behaviour will be even more egregious than it has been to date the consequences to our country and our democracy be damned.
So now you own it all not only everything Trump has done in the past, but everything he does in future. You own traumatized children in cages, dictators being praised, racists being honoured, citizens living in fear as they realize the criminal in the White House has now been strengthened in his resolve to put his own self interests above that of the country.
You now own every malicious tweet, every lie told, every action that harms our nation, every law defiantly ignored, every act of revenge taken against political adversaries, and every insane utterance that comes out of your pResidents mouth.
When you voted to acquit, you not only condoned Trumps treasonous acts, you became complicit in covering them up and as further crimes against the American people are revealed in future, you will own all of that, too.
There is no coming back from what youve done, no excuses you can make that can possibly lessen your own guilt, your own complicity, your own willingness to ignore your oath of office in order to exonerate an immoral liar who has done everything in his power to undermine our democracy, and the institutions that protect it.
A word of caution here. Youve been told that this is just another scandal that will be forgotten within weeks, just another news story that will be a faint memory by November.
If I were you, I wouldnt comfort myself with that thought. No one is forgetting anything and there are millions of us who will make sure they dont.

(248 posts)I totally agree! Also, i wish all media, social media etc. would refer to trump as "Impeached President trump" in every single reference to him. It would drive him nuttier than he is now.

(3,162 posts)...of the lies and contortions they'll forever have to go through and endure, to have carried water for trump...
...no matter how decent they thought themselves to be, they'll forever be joined at the hip with most corrupt, divisive and evil President we've ever had and all his associated acts...
...in their obituary, regardless of what good they may have accomplished in their lives, there will be an asterisk next to their name, "..voted to acquit.....
"
...today I feel contempt for them, tomorrow I may feel pity...
...either way, they've sold out truth, justice and their country for 30 pieces of silver...

(4,033 posts)As usual Nance, you hit the nail on the head. The GOP Senators are guilty of perjury to the oath they took when they had already made up their minds, when they refused to look at documents or call witnesses, when they allowed Trump refuse to let anyone respond to subpoenas and refused to provide any documents, when they blamed the Democrats for not having the documents or the witness statements when they knew that of course the Dems didn't have them because Trump violated the law and ignored the subpoenas.
WE WILL NOT FORGET!!

(100,068 posts)You don't just decide to commit treason and overthrow an election, it takes an entire party, a complicit media, and a populace that is controlled by the message they are hearing. Only then can you commit treason and get away with it.

Not that I'm a nasty, vindictive person or anything (well, maybe, a bit), but I won't pass up an opportunity to remind any rethug who says anything that they are responsible for not stopping it when they could.

(1,648 posts)That all republicans will only do what is best for all of them and they will sacrifice everyone else to do it. The mistake their followers make is that they think that they are in the 'best for all of them' crowd, when they are just 'everyone else.'

(8,090 posts)Do Democrats not understand modern-day Republicans? Lamar Alexander laid it out -- they're getting what they want. They're not going to stop because Democrats are accusing them of being 'complicit.' And I assure you, they're sleeping like babies... on beds made of money.

(27,814 posts)It has nothing to do with guilt. What it does have to do with is political survival.
What the Democrats think of Republicans is irrelevant. It's what the voters think that counts.
While the Republicans are insisting it's time to move on from this whole 'impeachment thing', the facts are still coming out.
And as more facts come out about the depth of Trump's corruption, his acquittal is going to start to stink - and the senate jurors who acquitted him are going to be on the hook for having done so without documents and witnesses.
Keep in mind that over 70% of the people wanted witnesses and docs - so that group is already predisposed to thinking that the senate Republicans were afraid of the truth coming out, but voted to acquit anyway. Not a good look.
And any further evidence that surfaces after-the-fact will only make them look even worse.

NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... doesn't mean they will acknowledge their own guilt - and isn't Trump the classic example of that?
Denying guilt doesn't make you innocent.

America First? This phrase from isolationist America, 1920s, making America great for the first time. Isolationism went along with Social Darwinism, a real basis for Nazism, white supremacy. Democracy was the very antithesis. These topics were all thrown about around the end of World War II as the United Nations charter was formulated. We know how much they hate the UN today. They have a plan of some sort. What is it? Perpetual war again?
