A notably animated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) decried President Donald Trumps State of the Union address Thursday, calling it a manifesto of mistruths and a reality show using the House of Representatives as a backdrop.
Now famously, Pelosi tore the speech in half upon Trumps conclusion, a move which drew swift and full-throated denunciation from Trumps allies.
When pressed on the act Thursday, she snapped that she doesnt need lessons about dignity from anyone, but especially not from the President.
She added that she felt liberated after shredding the document, that as soon as he was about one-third of the way through the speech she knew that she had to do something to show the American people that the address was full of falsehoods.

Her voice rising, Pelosi said that it is an absolute imperative that America have a new President next year, one who does not denigrate our values, is not disloyal to the Constitution and does not degrade the environment.
He has shredded the truths in his speech, he has shredded the Constitution with his conduct, she thundered. I shredded his state of his mind address.

Im one of those who refuse to watch the media spin any longer, so this is a tremendous help to keep me apprized of important things.

(8,020 posts)That's outright sexism. If a man said that they'd have written, "In a strong tone of conviction...".
We need to keep calling out these so-called journalists.

(33,643 posts)I don't associate 'snapping' with either sex in particular, nor do I think do most people.
Now, had it been 'screeched' or 'wailed' or if she'd 'gotten hysterical' I would see your point.
This is, however, the sort of words the media uses in general to describe how Democrats said something. Us Dems are always 'slamming', 'blasting', 'snapping', 'complaining', and words of that nature.
Republicans, OTOH, they 'question', 'retort', 'assert', 'bellow' and the like.
Annoys the hell outta me.

(2,690 posts)I think the verb works here. She snapped -- meaning she responded quickly and with anger because she was asked a stupid question that suggested she had over-reacted or acted improperly. I think it is absolutely correct to say, hey, the reporter asked a stupid question and she was having none of it. She snapped at the fool and emphasized the difference between the low life in the WH and herself.
Of course "she snapped." I would have, also. Wouldn't you?
In my long lifetime I've never heard a man referred to as having 'snapped.' Only women. and her words were clear, deliberate and concise, not what is generally referred to as having 'snapped'.
I understand if you have heard it used with men. That is not my considerable experience.

(15,536 posts)I have never heard a sharp retort by a man characterized as "he snapped". Maybe I just miss those times when reporters say that, though I doubt it.
It is akin to saying "she was snippy". Are men ever referred to as "snippy"?
Language is a powerful tool.

(2,690 posts)and possibly, albeit momentarily, sanity. If so, I disagree with your interpretation. The verb used here means she immediately and impatiently replied to a very stupid question.

Words fail me. I am in awe of Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Im a 70 yo white male. In my 70 years I have had four idols Mickey Mantle, George Carlin, Barbara Jordan and Dave Letterman.
I now have a fifth. Yeah, I admire and respect her that much.
P.S. I know Mantle had his shortcomings, but I was a kid. I offer no apologies for idolizing my childhood hero. And I was disappointed in Carlin when he did that commercial for AT&T (or whatever corporate giant it was). But, as Joe E. Brown said, Nobodys perfect.
