On Thursday, the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee released a report outlining steps that should be taken to prevent foreign influence campaigns from interfering in the 2020 presidential election.
One of the key recommendations was that President Donald Trump stop asking for political help from such schemes despite the fact that less than 24 hours before, a majority of the committees members voted to acquit Trump of abuse of power for trying to do precisely that.
The President of the United States should take steps to separate himself
from political considerations when handling issues related to foreign intelligence operations, stated the report. These steps should explicitly include putting aside politics when addressing the American people on election threats and marshalling all the resources of the U.S. Government to effectively confront the threat.

(36 posts)Wasn't the reason they didn't vote to convict supposedly that he wasn't trying to do just that?
Well now they've set a precedent that it's okay. If he does it again, that would be a really good argument against impeaching him. It wasn't before but now they've normalized it.

(36 posts)is to point out that this is very concrete evidence that all the stuff Republicans said about why Trump was innocent and shouldn't be impeached & convicted was just to cover their predefined conclusion, not that it had any connection to reality. They didn't want to impeach a president of their own party. Full stop.
That they believed he was guilty and are now pleading with him not to keep committing the same thing as absolute proof that Republicans in congress are putting the country at risk for their political party's gain.
Saying they are afraid of Trump is more cover for their actions.
