We all remember the video of Romney speaking to a room of his rich supporters and complaining that 47% of the population would never vote for him because they were takers.
And of course, when Romney used the word takers, he was not referring to the financial industry recipients of trillions in quantitative easing, or to be honest, corporate welfare, nor was he referring to the huge corporate farm owners who receive so much in corporate welfare.
Nor was he referring to people like Jeff Bezos, or the Walton family, or the Trump family. What they take from the taxpayers is never called welfare, or subsidies. Those terms are reserved for the always undeserving victims of US conservative economic policies.
But all of that aside, out of 53 GOP Senators, 52 showed a complete lack of integrity, and showed their cowardice, and their lack of any feeling for this country.

(6,228 posts)Back when repubs were sane and worked with Dems to help we the people, Romney's Dad, George, was governor of Michigan. I think his Dad might have had an effect on him.

That is what separates him from the other Republicans. They will accept that compromise in order to retain power.

(972 posts)Romney doesn't like Trump and this was a safe way to say "Fuck you" to him without really doing anything. If he had even an ounce of integrity he wouldn't be a Republican. That's to say nothing of the way in which he made his fortune or the way in which he changes his stance on issue for political expediency.

(11,605 posts)This sounds like it was ripped right from the talking points Don Jr. sent around yesterday. I personally think Romney was acting at least mostly out of conviction, but even if you don't, it's not in our interests to discredit him. No matter what Democrats say at this point about Trump, Ukraine, impeachment, or even the Friday Night Massacre, it feels like they are just being written off as partisan. Romney's speech on the floor the other day, on the other hand, was more powerful as a case against Trump because it came from someone in his own party.

(972 posts)You can gush about his meaningless vote all you want. Even if it was based on conviction and not a safe way to send a fuck you to Trump it doesn't make up for what he's done his entire adult life. The guy has been a unprincipled opportunist his entire adult life. Just because he does one thing right, for dubious reasons, I'm not going to hold him up as some man of integrity.

(4,341 posts)It was a beautiful speech, one that should be played over and over, and hopefully heard by republicans when its played.
Romney did the right thing, what is the use to bash him now? If he runs for office then bring his baggage to light, but makes no sense to try to disparage the guy after he has shown he acted out of principle. Yes, he hates the con, and so many of those chickens from the GOP do too, but he had the balls to say it and vote accordingly, it should be left at that.

(4,341 posts)I don't think anyone at DU or even the Democratic party would vote for Romney if he decides to run for president, we all know who he is, what he has done, and how he thinks, but one thing he did prove this time around is that he is a man of principle, whether he linked it to his religious beliefs or not, he did the right thing and he must be recognized for it, so this time around we can leave the rest to the past (unless he decides to run for anything) but lets allow him to basque in his good action, and lets applaud him for it.
