We are told that they urged him not to do so.
When did they know of his plan? Prior to acquittal?

Perhaps one of the senators closest to the White House (possibly Graham, Ron Johnson or Portman) let the cat out of the bag.

Because that would be infinitely worse than them knowing after the acquittal.
