Cost of "Healthcare/MFA/etc." vs cost of "Doing Nothing"

In all the discussion about various health care plans and proposals from Democratic candidates -- especially where reporters ask, "How much does your plan cost?" -- does anyone ever offer a compelling, simple comparison to how much the status quo will cost in years to come?

Everything has a cost. It's not like the current system represents $0 cost. But that question is always asked like the plan would be implemented in a vacuum.

And forgive me if this is indeed out there somewhere or if candidates are making that a part of the default discussion. It just seems that the current costs to families, the economy, and our society are not yet something that's obvious to a great many voters, or acknowledged by media people who keep trying to set up gotcha questions.
