My dad passed away last week and today we had a service for him and said out final farewells.
He was a Democrat through and through and he passed this along to his kids. He also was partially responsible for African Americans having a garden space in our little town which was nearly lily white at the time. He and my mom were reviled by some in town and it spread to his kids as well. One motherfucker tried to run me down while I was riding my bike. He was shouting "Tell your n*** loving dad he's next". I was 12 years old at the time. He found out who did it, called the police and persevered.
See, he was a christian. Not one of these holy rollers but one who walked the walk and talked the talk.
He taught us real values. He is missed.
I'm sorry if this post is offensive or inappropriate. Maybe I should have posted this elsewhere but I just want people to know a good man. We have a bad man in charge now. So good men need to be honored and respected.

(13,561 posts)Im sorry for your loss. My father passed many years ago, but I think he shared some of your fathers traits. He didnt preach much about Christianity, he simply lived and acted on his belief system as your dad did. Like your father, my father believed in offering the helping hand. Im so glad you have good memories of a good man. May he rest in peace after a life well lived.

(3,431 posts)My father was very similar, was basically giving career training via Vo-Tech schools to those who had been kicked to the curb by life, of all colors and creed.
Men of character help many more than those who get buildings named after them, but that is never their motivation. They take the critics noise in stride and know that if not for their thankless work, the world would be a cruel and tasteless place.

He sounds like a great dad, too, he gave you and your siblings of what is right, moral and just, real values to to live by, that now guide you. Our country, desperately needs more people who embody these qualities that were so integral to who your dad was. May he rest in peace. Thank for sharing about your dad and his legacy. Peace.

(641 posts)Its been difficult even though our family, and my dad, knew it was time. I really appreciate all the kindness shown here in DU and elsewhere. Now let's fight like hell to get Democrats elected both at the federal and state levels this year. That's what dad would have wanted. And it's what we all want.
Oh yeah, I dont want to forget all the nice people who gave me hearts. Not sure what Iay have done to earn them, but thank you very much.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
