U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he expects the coronavirus will go away in April when the heat comes in, saying the heat tends to kill viruses like this.

(14,075 posts)From Channel News Asia:
There is reason to believe that the seasonal pattern of novel coronavirus pneumonia may be similar to that of influenza infection and SARS, and thus cases may sharply fall by May, when temperatures in China warm up.
In countries with temperate climates such as China and the United States, the flu season usually starts in December with a peak in January or February, after which cases decrease.

(14,966 posts)If he directs CDC, NIH, FEMA, CBP, et al to ignore the various ways which coronavirus would otherwise fall under their remit, or forbids them to act against it in their various capacities, there is no way to stop him which will act quickly enough to stem the tide.
If this menace originated in a "shit-hole" country (i.e. anywhere in Africa) instead of one of his paymasters (China), maybe he would be hyper-aggressive like he claimed to wanted to be vis-a-vis Ebola.

(31,997 posts)This virus has not spread anywhere outside of China to any degree at all. Less than a dozen cases and all related to China. Don't spread media hype that is just made for ratings. Over a hundred people die in the US every DAY due to the common flu. Why doesn't the media talk about that? Roughly 50,000 people die in China every DAY of some cause. Yet we are supposed to get excited about 1000 people dying in a 2 month period and almost all those deaths were to people over 60 with pre-existing conditions? 3 million people died in China during that period. Let's get real.

(14,966 posts)influenza viruses the difference in cause of mortality for Americans for this particular coronavirus vs some other later cause will be measured in the millions within the lifetime of any non-elderly person reading this. This virus, like most emergent viruses, is either going to get squashed until the rate of new cases becomes zero or it will become endemic world-wide. The middle ground scenario where the virus is persistently active yet contained to one country or global region for years upon years is unlikely based on historical example.
Is that all in Trump's hands? No, of course not. But as POTUS and given the broad and varied swath of powers available to the office, he has it in his power to sabotage efforts to prevent the virus from becoming endemic in the US. All of the efforts the federal government has undertaken to date to prevent the spread of this virus to the US are things which Trump would conceivably attempt to undermine or reverse if challenged on his idiotic statement -- just to gratify his ego and assert his will.
Trump's language on this issue to date, and past behavior regarding directing federal agencies to act in support of his delusions and ego-driven whims, does not put it out of the realm of possibility that he would direct federal agencies to enact specific procedures which result in failure to contain this virus from becoming endemic in the US.
That's not click-bait. That's a cynical but sober assessment based on everything Trump has done this past 3 years and how other government entities have reacted, or not reacted, to his totally out-of-bounds actions.

(31,997 posts)President Trump said Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping reassured him that the cases of coronavirus are likely to dwindle during warmer months.
"He feels very confident, he feels very confident, Trump said. And he feels that, again as I mentioned, by April, or during the month of April, the heat generally speaking kills this kind of virus. So that would be a good thing.

(25,853 posts)At some point the virus will "go away", and maybe it will be in April, but it will have little or nothing to do with heat.
It will have to do with a combination of having infected all the easily infected people, along with various public health measures that will matter.

(4,986 posts)He said that statistically, this virus is much less threatening than the normal flu virus, with a mortality rate of 2% vs 10% for the flu. In comparison, the bird flu had a 70% mortality rate, but thankfully was short lived. Coronavirus is getting a lot of press right now because it's new, but each year, 5-6 million people die from the flu. These viruses are especially lethal for the very old, the weak, and anyone with compromised immune systems.
He said most importantly is to keep your hands away from your face until you've washed them after contact or being out in public. Keeping your hands washed is of major importance.

(59,584 posts)Not even remotely close:
CDC has their estimates for total caseloads from 2010 through 2019, and they range from 9.3 million to 43 million, depending on the year and severity.
For the same series of flu seasons, fatalities range from 12,000 to 61,000. A mortality rate of 10% would have meant 4.5 million deaths in the unusually heavy 2017-18 flu season, and I think we probably would have noticed 4.5 million Americans dying in the course of six months from a specific disease.
You're off by two orders of magnitude.

(14,145 posts).... low humidity & cold temps (winter weather) and viability of the flu virus and the flu season.
(begin snip)
Therefore, we can conclude that, at least in regions that have a winter season, the influenza virus survives longer in cold, dry air, so it has a greater chance of infecting another person.
Although other factors probably contribute as well, the main reason we have a flu season may simply be that the influenza virus is happier in cold, dry weather and thus better able to invade our bodies. So, as the temperature and humidity keep dropping, your best bet for warding off this nasty bug is to get your flu shot ASAP, stay warm, and invest in a humidifier.
