MSNBCs Chris Matthews fear of socialism sparked an unbelievable post-debate rant about a possible Bernie Sanders presidency where he suggested the candidate might have cheered socialist-led executions in Central Park during the Cold War.
Matthews began by praising Sen. Amy Klobuchars Friday debate performance but then veered off by warning viewers and a live studio audience about his personal views on socialism. The host suggested that Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders might have supported the violence of past socialist leaders.
Matthews said hed keep his opinions on socialism to himself, but quickly reversed himself.
I have my own views of the word socialist and Id be glad to share them with you in private. They go back to the early 1950s. I have an attitude about them. I remember the Cold War, he said.
Matthews continued, I have an attitude towards [Fidel] Castro. I believe if Castro and the Reds had won the Cold War there would have been executions in Central Park and I might have been one of the ones getting executed. And certain other people would be there cheering, okay?

MATTHEWS: What do you make of the actual visual that people will see on TV and probably, as you know, as well as I, will remember a lot longer than words spoken tonight? And that's the president looking very much like a jet, you know, a high-flying jet star. A guy who is a jet pilot. Has been in the past when he was younger, obviously. What does that image mean to the American people, a guy who can actually get into a supersonic plane and actually fly in an unpressurized cabin like an actual jet pilot?
[...]
MATTHEWS: Do you think this role, and I want to talk politically [...], the president deserves everything he's doing tonight in terms of his leadership. He won the war. He was an effective commander. Everybody recognizes that, I believe, except a few critics. Do you think he is defining the office of the presidency, at least for this time, as basically that of commander in chief? That [...] if you're going to run against him, you'd better be ready to take [that] away from him.
[...]
MATTHEWS: Let me ask you, Bob Dornan, you were a congressman all those years. Here's a president who's really nonverbal. He's like Eisenhower. He looks great in a military uniform. He looks great in that cowboy costume he wears when he goes West. I remember him standing at that fence with Colin Powell. Was [that] the best picture in the 2000 campaign?
(snip)
MATTHEWS: We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like [former President Bill] Clinton or even like [former Democratic presidential candidates Michael] Dukakis or [Walter] Mondale, all those guys, [George] McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It's simple. We're not like the Brits. We don't want an indoor prime minister type, or the Danes or the Dutch or the Italians, or a [Russian Federation President Vladimir] Putin. Can you imagine Putin getting elected here? We want a guy as president.

I'm just amazed they actually pay for his opinion.

(21,288 posts)I saw it live after the debate and almost fell off my chair. He's equating socialism and totalitarian communism which is not what Sanders is about and wouldn't have any support if he was. I believe Sanders has stated he favors the "Nordic model" which isn't socialism by most definitions but more like well-regulated, egalitarian capitalism that doesn't allow the greed disease to get out of control.

The East German communists called themselves democratic and socialist. Most communists did. People were getting killed every day.
When the wall was being built in Berlin, blocks of buildings were being made part of it, windows were bricked in and people were jumping from windows to try and beat what would happen next. This was only 16-17 years after WWII. The folks who jumped from upper stories went splat unless someone in the west was there to break the fall.

(100,133 posts)...and staying with a family friend who had fled the Anschluss when she wasn't much older than I was that summer. It was an interesting connection -- it made me sensitive to the news out of Berlin from then on. I remember the news stories being exactly as you say, and as time went on people who tried to escape were shot by soldiers, or captured and imprisoned.
It is an odious thing for the USA to be building walls at the border, and for an American president to be suggesting that our border guards should shoot on sight.
