Drinking Liquids with Meals: Good or Bad?

Liquids may improve digestion

Liquids help break down large chunks of food, making it easier for them to slide down your esophagus and into your stomach. They also help move food matter along smoothly, preventing bloating and constipation.

Furthermore, your stomach secretes water, along with gastric acid and digestive enzymes, during digestion. In fact, this water is needed to promote the proper function of these enzymes.

Water may reduce appetite and calorie intake

Drinking water with meals can also help you pause between bites, giving you a moment to check in with your hunger and fullness signals. This can prevent overeating and may even help you lose weight. Additionally, one 12-week study showed that participants who drank 17 ounces (500 ml) of water before each meal lost 4.4 pounds (2 kg) more than those who did not.

Research also indicates that drinking water may speed up your metabolism by about 24 calories for every 17 ounces (500 ml) you consume. Interestingly, the number of calories burned decreased when the water was warmed to body temperature. This might be due to the fact that your body uses more energy to heat the cold water up to body temperature.

SUMMARY
Drinking water with meals may help regulate your appetite, prevent overeating, and promote weight loss. This does not apply to beverages that have calories. If you have GERD, limiting fluid intake with meals may decrease your reflux symptoms.

Personally, I have to simply not take in too much food and liquids at one sitting because doing so triggers and adrenal release that jacks up my blood pressure. It's very uncomfortable, but helps to keep my weight down.

Too much tea (with caffeine) will just make you jittery and dehydrated. Like coffee.

Unless it's good old southern sweet tea. That stuff is great for you!

No caffeine and taste great. I like the fruity berry ones. Cost me less than a dollar a gallon.

because it can contribute to filling you up.

Drink healthy fluids, of course, like water more so than alcohol.

We werent allowed to drink with a meal.
Then when i was 20 i nearly choked to death on a piece of carrot. A piece of dry bread took it down.
Now i always keep something on hand to drink.

Food will get stuck halfway down and sparkling water is the only thing that has worked.
