A former convict from New Jersey has been charged with targeting his daughters friends at Sarah Lawrence College for indoctrination and exploitation, engaging in sex trafficking, extortion and forced labor, according to an indictment released on Tuesday.
Shortly after the man, Lawrence V. Ray, left prison about a decade ago, he moved into his daughters dormitory at the elite college in Yonkers, N.Y., and began manipulating her friends and others, the indictment said. Over the course of nearly a decade, Mr. Ray subjected his victims to sexual and psychological manipulation and physical abuse.
He is accused of extorting money and unpaid labor from several young adults who came under his sway and had at least one engage in prostitution for his financial benefit. The extortion came after he extracted false confessions from his victims, through tactics like sleep deprivation, psychological and sexual humiliation, verbal abuse, physical violence and threats of legal action, the indictment charged.
Mr. Ray, 60, was also accused of laundering about $1 million he obtained from his victims, the indictment said. He was arrested on Tuesday morning at his home in Piscataway, N.J.

(9,069 posts)A New York con man and old friend of disgraced ex-NYPD top cop Bernie Kerik became the ringleader of a Nxivm-like cult at Sarah Lawrence College brainwashing his daughter and her friends into following his so-called teachings, while taking advantage of them sexually and emotionally, according to a New York Magazine expose.
Bay Ridge-born Lawrence Ray, 59, who was convicted of securities fraud in 2003, reportedly manipulated the bright college kids into following his so-called self-improvement program, controlling every aspect of their lives and convincing them to give him money and sex.
Some of the students were able to escape the cult, but others remain under Rays spell, according to the report.
The alleged con began in 2010 when Ray moved in with his daughter, Talia, and her 19-year-old friends in a drab dorm on the Bronxville campus and in an Upper East Side apartment he rented during school breaks. He had just been released from prison after being locked up for violating his parole in the 2003 case, the article says.

Ray was once good friends with Kerik. But Rays cooperation with the FBI in the corruption investigation into the former police commissioner helped expose Keriks improper acceptance of tens of thousands in free renovations on his then-Riverdale apartment from DiTomassos firm, Interstate Industrial.
Kerik, the citys former police and correction commissioner, went to prison for four years.
Hailed as a hero for leading the NYPD during the 9/11 attacks, Kerik fell from grace when he became the first New York City police commissioner ever imprisoned on federal crimes. His legal problems clouded the political fortunes of other elected officials, especially that of his mentor, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
"I havent spoken to Larry Ray in over 19 years. I only wish that the FBI and the Justice Department realized what a con-man he was prior to making him their superstar witness against me," Kerik told News 4 in a statement. "In their zeal to destroy me and my family, they ignored his lies, deceit, and inconsistencies. Hopefully, this indictment will be the end of his reign of terror on everyone he has conned, manipulated, or deceived, and the children he has hurt."

(721 posts)These kinds of people use the same playbook to coerce and manipulate. They prey on the innocent and unsuspecting and do a lot of damage.
Young college kids are naive and unsuspecting and idealistic. Colleges need to teach kids just how the playbook works so they can recognize a monster like this before they're harmed.
1. Elicit compassion through victimhood
2. Establish trust through emotional confidence
3. Give gifts to establish expected reciprocity
4. Isolate emotionally from friends and family
5. Keep pushing boundaries, small to bigger, in order to change the targets behavior
Once he's put where he belongs I hope they throw away the keys.
