The comments down thread indicate shes running as a GOP-lite candidate

(1,713 posts)Why do some progressives think ideas that are popular in the heavy blue states are popular in red states. It's why moderates win House and Gov races there. Good Grief, there is a segment of this party that will keep us a minority for decades. Let Amy run a Kentucky race.

(36,118 posts)Let her jets fly around and flags wave or whatever shit she thinks will win R voters over - but IGNORE progressive ideas instead of belittling them

(20,998 posts)Period. Full stop.
This is NOT a gentleman's bout of fisticuffs, THIS IS A KNIFE FIGHT.
I am sick to death of our "not progressive enough" bullshit. Do we like tRump* and tRump*ism taking over our country?

(36,118 posts)I don't need a KY candidate to sound like AOC. I need someone to sound like whatever "defeating the second most dangerous man in the country" sounds like.

(5,042 posts)All she's doing by mentioning it is conceding a right wing talking point which makes Mitch McConnell look like he's not a full blown lying piece of shit.

(50,326 posts)she's not McConnell and her election might put Democrats in charge of the Senate. It's unlikely Kentucky would ever elect the person progressives want and they just have to get over it because the alternative to McGrath is much, much worse.

(58,772 posts)sucks, but reality is. If she unseats McConnell and votes Dem 80-90% of the time, I can dig it.

(7,113 posts)...for his consistently non-progressive voting record.
I had to LOL when my friend demanded that Jones be primaried by a true progressive!
Jones is the first Dem senator in Alabama in decades, yet this far-left-winger thought voters of this ruby-red state would elect an ideologically pure progressive!

(36,118 posts)Raising their profile by highlighting your opposition to their ideas is no different than saying "Vote for me, I hate liberals, too!!"
It's politics for the lazy

(56,582 posts)She needs to signal to racist white Kentuckians that she's "safe" to vote for. We don't get that seat unless she manages to do that.
leftstreet
(36,118 posts)Seems it would be easier to do by a primary challenge to McConnell
But, whatever

(56,582 posts)I canvassed for Obama in KY and WV back in 2008. I had a depressing number of people respond, "Yeah, we're voting for the n****r".
She needs the racist vote to win. And we need that seat.

(7,440 posts)McConnell goes to lobbying school and the Dems get closer to control of the Senate. McGrath is running as a Democrat, and she'll likely vote with Dems at least 85% of the time. I don't care if she's the darling of the moonshine coalition. There's a "D" beside her name. I'm fairly close to the edge of "left" on the continuum, but Kentucky is not the same as my state. I'll take a "D".

Running progressives in red states or districts hasn't been terribly successful. Certainly wasn't in 2018.

We exist. Amy is just not that great of a candidate, I saw her twice and donated money.
I will vote for her, but I know we must have a stronger person somewhere.

(26 posts)So is my mom and my sister. I've been a lurker here since shrubs inauguration. But there are lots of very ignorant people here that believes all news besides Fox is fake. Another thing is they blamed Obama for their high health insurance premiums. Many Kentuckians hated the idea of expanding Medicaid but now that we have it they can't get enough of it. So even though many Kentuckians might be opposed to those liberal ideas, I'm sure they would embrace them once they are passed and implemented. Also Andy Beshear won here largely because Bevin was framed as a horrible human being, not as a republican. I think if McGrath did the same against Moscow Mitch it would help her a lot.

(21,845 posts)A strong Obamacare with a public option, expanded Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, and strong regulation of insurance providers is not exactly a regressive conservative position.

(4,986 posts)Shes running in Kentucky. Those are solid and achievable platform points that would benefit her state. Sounds fine to me.
I like service for college tuition ideas - especially if theres non-military options focusing on environmental, community, or health service. Is just my opinion, but I would have benefited from such when I was in the worst of my PTSD years as a young adult. I just get a little excited when I hear those type solutions.
Im pleased with my angry-at-Moscow Mitch donations to her campaign over the recent weeks. Is a good ad.

(945 posts)It reminds me of the days in 2014 of Charlie Crist running to unseat Rick Scott for governor. Crist had been a former republican. People on this board hated him, and focused on that more than they focused on the actual republican. Scott is now a Senator and voted to acquit 45. Crist is barely noticeable in his district as Representative.
Thank God for those Progressives, right?

"Tuition Support"
"Tuition Reform"
"Lowering Tuition Costs"
"Early Medicare Buy-In"
"Public Option"
"Lowering Health Care Costs"
Much better names.
Not ones with 'Free' (when it's not) and not ones with Mandates ('For All', like you WILL have this, like it or not).
