General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had an interesting encounter with a Trumper today.
Suffice to say he was a highly educated, intelligent professional. Our encounter was in a professional, albeit informal, setting.
I had on a Navy Veteran ball cap and a Fuck Trump t-shirt under a quarter zip fleece. In truth, I forget it was the t-shirt I was wearing today. For a reason I won't share, I had to take off the fleece. Until then, I had no idea this guy was a Trumper. He saw my shirt and instantly asked me (challenged is a better word) who I would vote for.
Knowing where the conversation was about to go, and being very much undecided, I thought the best way to fuck with him was to give him a curve ball. In that I was wearing the shirt I was wearing, I figured he was thinking I was some wild eyed liberal. So I said Bloomberg. That stopped him for a moment, but he came back with "yeah, the guy wants to overturn the Second Amendment" to which I replied "I bet you liked him before he changed teams." He chuckled and softened a bit at that. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
"Did you vote for Obama?"
"Yes"
"So you think his blah blah blah blah . . . . . ?"
"That was policy. Policy is a fair thing to debate."
"So why don't you like Trump?"please.
"Let me give you a very recent example. Just a few days ago, in a speech from the White House that was televised and likely seen around the world, he used the word 'bullshit'. From the WHITE HOUSE. That's disgusting. I didn't serve so a man can get elected and debase the office. He talks like a mobster. He's just plain embarrassing."
"Well, I don't like all he does either . . . . . blah blah blah blah . . . . ." All the wind was out of his sails.
I have no doubt his mind was unchanged. But I DO know the argument about Trump's manner, demeanor, deportment, character, etc., will shut these people up.
Once they shut up, some of them may at least listen. Maybe.
Maybe not.

(12,638 posts)They parrot Limbaugh, who says "thats the ONLY way trump can tell us what he's doing..." Like the damn President of the US cant do a simple press release of "what he's doing". Like a NORMAL human would do
Then you have those who say "I like how he doesnt care what anyone thinks". Well, fine, but theres a right way & a wrong way to show that

(2,154 posts)Bloomberg has vowed to continue to attack Baby Don whether he is the nominee or not. He has the billions and he knows Don's weaknesses. He can shatter Trump all by himself. What will be the crack in Don's attack plan, is Romney. He is trying to get the sane GOPers together in a group to save their party from Trump. And they of course become Trump's enemies. Romney is in a position to convince the money people to dump Trump. This could be the two front attack that brings Trump down. Trump will be so spread out trying to attack his growing list of enemies (Gawd does that sound third world or what?) that he will make a huge mistake and down he goes.

(6,843 posts)They are all wannabe tough guys.
I grew up on a ranch with 1000 head of cattle. I rode, roped, branded, castrated, drove tractors, carried rifles, all of it. I knew real cowboys who did it for a living. I was friends with rodeo competitors (I could never do that - not skilled enough).
The men and women I knew were honest, kind, and generally good. These wannabees all want to show how tough they are.
Funny thing is, when you're trying to convince an animal that outweighs you by 1200 lbs, being tough doesn't help. Being smart and fair does though.

(15,182 posts)I am (deeply) involved in a horse rescue sanctuary in Southern Oregon and we have a number of horses who were designated to be dangerous and scheduled to be euthanized by their previous owners (because that always seems to be the remedy for a problem horse) when we chose to rescue them. They had one thing in common - tough guy trainers. ALL of them - Echo, Woody, Thor, Casper - have, with lots of time, patience, and love become wonderful members of our herd and our horse family. Echo's previous owners tried to train him with a 2X4! Casper, a beautiful gray Arabian, is now gentle enough for children to groom. The point here, is that the previous trainers were all determined to force these horses to behave in their prescribed way. And their cruelty and impatience ruined these animals until we stepped in.
Being a tough guy isn't the answer.

We both took that as a very encouraging development.

(12,638 posts)Back in '16, there were a lot of people who publicly would say "i'm not voting for him" but did. Today, some trump voters are scared to admit they now cant stand him, because of how adamant some of their friends are. So they may be saying "4 more years!" in public, but in the booth its "you know what? Screw him AND them"

(1,977 posts)To trumpers with kids I say, he is not what I want my child to aspire to be. His actions, mannerisms and words are not what I want my child to model his behavior after. How can I be ok with him as a president when he is not fit for my child to watch him on television?
That works. They are stuck with him and there is nothing they can do about it. Sometimes one of them will say something about PC this or that but generally they agree he is uncouth.

(12,638 posts)He actually unfriended last week me on FB; even though he's known where i stand since day one. And he's not even the most strident trumper on my friends list. He's very well versed on many topics & easy to converse with on those subjects.
My offense? I posted the video of trump acting like a 5 yr old during the national anthem. He said "that was a private party". I said "Character is what you do when you dont think anyone will see you". He couldnt refute that, so i was gone.

(8,865 posts)alot of well educated individuals that I know were Republicans all their lives and just go along with this entire Republican conflagration because of that. The term "Scorched Earth" comes to mind.
The reality of this entire mess is that a large percentage of these people continue to have their bank accounts padded by tax cuts their republican party provides them scott free. They are thinking of their finances prospering, with only having to vote for a few minutes every four years to get their wealth to escalate, and they could give a Rats ass about the country, democracy, or their children and grand children. They, like Trump and the Republicans are so un-fathomably narcistic they can only, and will only, think of themselves.........period. I suppose there are a number of these almost sociopaths that are also into power and status (think politicians and corporate executives).............all exuding nauseating virtues and disgusting values........
Most disturbing is the spawn they raise, indoctrinating them to think just like them. Think no farther than the horrific children of Donald Trump............

(32,017 posts)None that I have talked to really "liked" Trump. They acknowledge that he is a boorish buffoon, but that's not enough to get them to vote for a Democrat. For most of them, I think, voting Democratic would threaten their masculinity. Deep down, I think that's what this is really about.
