12. I stayed with my Dad during his mental decline. He could "pull it together" for occasions.

Most people who were around us couldn't see the decline. But the occasions of "pulling it together" got rarer and rarer, and behind closed doors he was more and more incoherent. Took years to go from slight speech errors to full blown dementia.
