which is merely intended to distract everyone from all the ugly shizz the administration pulls, such politically interfering in criminal justice matters

Barr is trying to stem the tide of something by pulling a woe-is-me gambit when in fact he is doing exactly what he and Trump both want him to be doing, without any regrets or shame.

I would guess the something he's trying to massage is preventing/slowing down more DOJ resignations, or to give Senate GrOPers some respite from the growing criticism that their acquittal votes creates an emboldened lawless dictator. Or maybe not either of those things exactly, but something along those lines.

He thinks it will be easier for him to get the dirty work done, and easier for the GOP to survive this dirty work being done, if he pretends to be marginally independent even though still certainly an ideologue of a certain type.
