"I am very proud that this picture goes around the world because it is a symbol of liberation"

One of the most rewarding things of my job is the opportunity that I have to restore the photos without thinking about what will happen next, and then be contacted by people related to them - be it Bernice King (MLK’s daughter); or even the granddaughter of this building’s owner!

She said: “It was his brother, Charles Montag, who took the picture when my grandfather was still in the war. I am very proud that this picture goes around the world because it is a symbol of liberation in our region. Thank you so much for that!”

Captain Thomas H. Garahan, ‘Easy’ Company, 2nd Battalion, 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division raises the ‘Stars and Stripes’ flag made secretly by a local French girl. Bitche, in the Moselle department of Lorraine in northeastern France.
