Sign a petition?

Simple question: When did a petition ever work?

I get requests every week by mail and the internet asking me to sign a petition to let somebody know that we mean business.

I've pretty much decided that it is just a way to add another name to a mailing list to ask for donations.

And the same thing with "surveys" - is there really someone sitting in DC (or wherever) that's totaling up the answers to help formulate a policy - or are they also building a mailing list?

I'm anxious to hear what you know.........................
