Cardi B says economics needs to be taught in high school

?s=20

In fairness we did some of that where I went to high school. In a class called "World Problems" we learned to balance a checkbook and fill out a short form tax return. It's been 45 years however so I don't know what kids are taught today.

In Texas there's an "economics of free system" course that's required for seniors to graduate.

And if you have trouble with Algebra II, there's a junior/senior math class which, among other things, includes how to read a bank statement and balance your checkbook. Personally I think exempting the pre-calculus kids from that last course is a mistake.

But yeah, kids should be taught about compound interest and suchlike. Schools should teach the things that rich fathers and mothers teach their fortunate offspring.

basic English competency, enough to master subject/verb agreement at least.

Is that the same as fart rape?

We didn't have to worry about grammar shaming way back a long time ago. The nuns would slap you with a ruler until you learned basic subject/verb agreement. God forbid you didn't memorize your times tables correctly.

I know you didn't intend a hilarious response, but I'm laughing my ass off right now.

Thanks for brightening my day a little.

We'll just add "grammar shaming" to the bucket of liberal caricatures.

Compound interest is taught during the time students learn logarithms, so they can solve the exponential, solve for the exponential, and all parts of the formula.

as a cheap form of daycare for their parents. There is no expectation from home that they listen to their teachers and be respectful in class.

So, it doesn't matter what classes are offered to them, they are not going to take advantage of the free training.

I chose that “easy” class to avoid taking Algebra II. It turned out to be a great decision.
We learned how to decipher credit card offers, how different types of interest are calculated, loan agreements, the basics of the stock market and other investments, how to do taxes, all things banking, the basics of buying a house and what to look for (and avoid) in rental leases, figuring out a monthly budget ... all that good stuff and more.
Imho, it should be a required course, not an elective.

to evaluate which first car was best for me, or how to invest money. Kids need both, IMO, training that prepares them for the career that they plan to pursue and training on business and money matters because their life changes in time and those skills become valuable.

so she's wrong about those classes not being available in high schools in the Bronx when she was in school.

She might also be interested to know that community college and state university are tuition free for NYS residents (thanks to the hard work of Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo), so students here in NY can learn about finance and economics on a college level for free.

but it was late in the decade. There are also a differences in requirements for local and Regents diplomas in NYS, and private / religious schools can opt out of certain requirements (or add additional requirements) by creating their own "school" version of the local diploma, subject to approval by the NYS Board of Regents.

Cardi B is 27 years old. That would mean she began high school around 2006-2007. She is clearly wrong in saying that high schools in the Bronx did not offer the standard NYS courses during her years as a student. Because she is making those assertions to an audience that believes her word and because the false narrative is in the service of a political agenda, this video is especially egregious.

Getting this fact wrong and spreading this particular falsehood in order to boost a politician's career is a slap in the face to all the parents, teachers, administrators, and activists who have been leading the long-standing fight for equity in education for all students in all communities.
