And the impact absorbing door panels do an 'aqueduct' job when the car is upright and the bumper strikes low, but all bets are off when the car is upside down and the open window is ground zero for the impact.

We'll have to wait and see.

Ryan Newman walking around hospital after horrific Daytona 500 crash
Feb 19, 2020

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman, who was hospitalized after a horrific crash on Monday during the final lap of the Daytona 500, is continuing to improve after a horrific crash at the Daytona 500.

Roush Fenway Racing released a statement Wednesday morning saying Newman is showing "great improvement."

"The veteran driver is fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center. True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking with staff, friends and family while spending time playing with his two daughters.

I'm still thinking 'Mother of all Concussions" and all the associated medical uncertainties. FWIW, NASCAR has a huge concussion protocol program, and I wonder if controlling medical information is part of it.

I don't think his rear end got jacked up.

His HANS device should have kept his head and neck properly aligned to prevent a broken neck. But it doesn't necessarily protect the body in a t-boning crash.

My heart goes out to him and his family. I hope he'll be okay.

Last lap, second car has a run, only hope you have to win is to block the car behind you. This happens routinely in NASCAR, especially on the two super speedways - Daytona and Talladega. The only variable is how the wreck unfolds... This one looked horrible, but Newman will survive. Conversely, Earnhardt Sr. didn't survive what looked to be a rather routine wreck.

" he has three cracked ribs, a broken leg, and a lacerated finger..". It was NO description at all. This to me means he's got something worse .. paralysis or brain damage? Something they hope might be temporary.

Lajoie, who clipped him:

Blaney turned him hard right and into the outside wall. His car immediately flipped and was sliding on its side when LaJoie rammed into it.

"I got a big push there that last coming to the white," LaJoie said after the race. "I don't know who was pushing me and I kind of stalled out and I don't know who hooked Newman. I was hoping he would kind of bounce off the fence to the left, but he didn't and I hit him ... it was some scary stuff. Don't' get me wrong. My car was on fire. My seat belts grabbed all sorts of areas, but it was a good day for us. I hope Ryan is OK."

Earnhardt got killed. They had already left, thinking no big deal, justa wreck ( like Hamlin did the other day when celebrating). They were on 95 and when his friend called from CT and told him he died...others must have heard it at the same time. He said everyone on the highway slowed down to a crawl.

He got rear-ended, off-center, which turned him sideways. Then he got t-boned by someone who could do nothing to avoid it - another victim of the accident.

I hope the injuries are not career-ending. It sounds like they're not life-threatening.
