Seriously; I have been looking at other countries to relocate to.
Canada 🇨🇦 is my first choice as I have a sister in BC. I know there are expats on here, any tips?

P.S. I seriously doubt that Trump will win in November, but I played along with this hypothetical, regardless.

(23,091 posts)My sister would move with us but it's our adult kids that I would miss so much. We have good friends in NZ and we know we could move to their region, but it's so very far away. With climate change, I've heard NZ will withstand the changes better than any other place. We've heard really good things about the Algarave (think that's the spelling?) region in Portugal and the other day saw a program where Italy looked very affordable. We're old and I'm partially disabled now so not good at fighting in the street.
Growing up I always admired the Germans who saw the rise of Hitler for what it was and who upended their lives and moved out of the country before the shit hit the fan. I always said I'd be like them and wouldn't get stuck in the middle of a fascist regime. It's easy to be starry eyed when not confronted with the reality, but not so easy when the reality is hitting us in the face.

(15,642 posts)If tRump wins, it will only be because he/they stole another election. If that happens, we have a bonafide dictator. The only thing left is massive protests in the capitol. Shutting down DC with millions of human bodies is the only thing that will remove him.

(6,588 posts)If he wins, I will stay & fight in any way I can to protect my country.
Edit to add: I'm convinced that Trumpism won't last forever. These societal attitudes swing back & forth like a pendulum over time. Look at Europe, where several countries have had fascist/authoritarian rulers for a while, then rejected it to become more liberal, then started swinging back toward authoritarian, as is happening now in Italy with the recent rise of Lega Nord (Northern League).
I think in America we've been lucky because this is the first time our pendulum has swung so far in the authoritarian direction. I also believe that when the pendulum swings this far in one direction, you can expect it to swing equally far in the opposite direction as people become angry about extremist policies & become motivated to work against them.

(1,977 posts)I have kids and while I would prefer to stay and fight, I dont see how it is fair to saddle them with what this country is becoming because I want it to be something else. I dont like what they are exposed to now, I certainly dont want them living through another 4 years not to mention what may come after.

(22,976 posts)Rather than using that effort and energy toward contemplating the best destination for sanctuary. This OUR home, and Ill be goddamned if I just turn tail and run without a hard fight.
We are experiencing the death-throes of a nihilistic political party, and their reptilian sense of survival is subverting the rule of law and turning the country upside-down. For now.
But as sure as the tides go in and out, they will fall.

I have friends in France and have thought about going either to France, Portugal, Spain, or Italy. There are ex Pat groups in many of those countries where it would be possible to meet some new friends.
Going alone at my age gives me pause. By the time we know the outcome of the November election, I will be pushing 70. Although I'm in pretty good health, I do have arthritis and have already had 3 joint replacements (2 hips and 1 knee). If I have to have the other knee, it will be hard to do without anyone to help while recovering.
I have suggested several times to my oldest son that he and his partner--they are gay--should seriously consider Canada. Both in tech and could probably easily get jobs. Then they could sponsor me. But so far, they aren't interested.
So, I don't know. I'm keeping my options open. Don't own a house. My apartment lease is up 2 months after the election.
I have a feeling I'm going to hope for the best and develop a plan for the worst that might involve leaving if Dems don't take the White House and Senate.

I am surprised he still is alive tbh.
Brain might be mushy due to all the diet drinks and rumored drug use over a life? (10+ toilet flushes babble that should be called out for what it is: EVIDENCE)
It's not like he's an actual hard body taking care of himself, he's a 73 year old blob.
He must have seemed real cool on that TV show I didn't watch?
One leaked medical file, leaked tax returns, leaked college grades, etc etc. there are things to be getting at....
Deep dive [Opposition Research] done all the time?
Guessing a few greased palms is all it would take?
You'd think all this awful would be motivating enough!?!

(3,363 posts)I don't really have any good options. I don't work in a career field that can easily transfer to other countries and I'm not rich.
I'm feeling super depressed over the prospects of being trapped here if Trump wins again.
