BILOXI -- A 12-year-old-girl received a black doll with beads forming a noose around its neck at a Mississippi Gulf Coast Mardi Gras parade, and officials said Monday that police were investigating the incident as a hate crime.
Nicole Fairconeture of Pass Christian said she and her family were attending the Krewe of Nereids parade Sunday when a man riding on one of the floats called her daughter to get a Mardi Gras throw.
"She grabbed the item, put it to her chest, and was coming back and he called her back," Fairconeture told The Sun Herald newspaper. "When she turned around, he said, 'That's you.'"
The doll was black and "was dressed like a slave," Fairconeture said.
The upset mother found police and handed the doll to the officers; her uncle later filed a police report. Waveland Mayor Mike Smith said the incident is being considered a hate crime, with both Waveland and Bay St. Louis police working on the investigation. "When I seen that it had happened, it infuriated me," Smith said.

(22,976 posts)Im not being flippant, either. Racism and racist incidents have been skyrocketing since Trumps been in office.

Of course, my cousin was born and raised in Cicero IL. Haven't seen him since my mom invited him to my wedding 36 yrs ago. If I were on fire, I wouldn't ask him for help.

I can fully believe this happened, I just need a little more verification.

(15,937 posts)My MIL had some of these dolls. I don't know why exactly, but when she passed away and we were cleaning out the garage, I came across them and threw them away.
If no one knows about these dolls, they are stuffed material dolls with black fabric.
This is the doll given to the little girl.

(90,674 posts)...item for families who couldn't afford store-bought dolls with china heads. Some rag dolls were white, like Raggedy Ann, and some were not.
Whether you think the old-fashioned outfit is "slave clothing" or not depends entirely on the context. The sick racist fck who did this, and added a noose of Mardi Gras beads, obviously intended it to hurt.
Without seeing the rag dolls you threw out, I can't tell if these were something that might have ended up on Antiques Roadshow as a piece of historical Americana or not.

(41,960 posts)Im not denying ANY racism on the coast. It is there. But they dont let just anybody have a float and they dont let just anybody ride them. Its expensive, it has enormous social cache, and doing anything to Mess with that would get your ass busted six ways from Sunday by the Krewe putting on the parade. It just aint worth it unless youre trying to sabotage something.
The small town parades arent like New Orleans. They bank their economics in being family friendly. Some jackass might have done it, but trust me, if hes found out hes going to be very, very sorry.

(11,302 posts)This just seems really over the top. As described here, this is so blatantly racist (and frightening!). And, as you pointed out, in a very public (and crowd friendly) setting. I was also struck by how time and effort had gone into the "doll" .. it doesn't look like just a throw away item. True .. there are nut cases and goobers everywhere ... But given the time, place and circumstances ...
(And .. no trouble at all identifying who this individual was. If he was riding one of those floats .. at least half the town knows his name, and who his greats were on the maternal side.)
